June 12, 2011 What an exciting time, both for my wife and me and for Concordia. As I have been visiting with folks I can sense the thrill, excitement, enthusiasm, and hope for the future. This is one of those times in life when you can look back and see that God has been forming you for the very moment in which you find yourself. As I reflect on my placement and call to Concordia Lutheran Church it seems apparent to me that God has been at work forming me for this moment. God has formed me through eight years of theological study. In 2003 I transferred to Concordia University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. While there I learned Greek, Hebrew, and fundamental Lutheran theology. This is also where I met Kali, my wonderful wife. However it took us four years to start dating and three more years after that to get married. In 2006 I started my first year at Concordia Seminary here in Saint Louis. I thought I knew it all when I received my bachelor’s degree in theology. However, Seminary really opened my eyes and heart to theology and the Christian Gospel. Here is where I developed a true love for reading the Scriptures and engaging in theology. If God used Seminary to open my heart to Christian theology then Vicarage opened my heart to Christian ministry. On my vicarage I worked with Good Shepherded Lutheran Church in Roanoke, Virginia and Lutheran Outreach at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Here God opened my eyes to the necessity of the Christian Gospel in peoples’ lives. Above all else, God has formed me by joining me together with my beautiful wife, Kali. We have been married for close to a year now. Since we have been married she has been a wonderful source of encouragement and blessing. We are both extremely excited for this placement. She graduated from Concordia University in Saint Paul with a bachelor’s degree in Christian Outreach. She has a wonderful gift for identifying outreach and evangelism opportunities. Looking back, it is clear that God has been forming me. Looking forward, I am excited to see the formation continue. As God molds us so that together we can proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the community of Maplewood. What an exciting time to be at Concordia! What an exciting time to be in the service of God proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world! Pastor Wood The following people with cancer: Carol Hassbaum Lauren Drury Mike Cochran T.J. Did You Know...Donuts Edition Did you know that Timothy's weekly donut bill is $45? That's about 47 cents per donut. The member of the Sr. Youth that you see behind the counter is responsible making coffee, picking up donuts, washing mugs and cleaning up that week. The proceeds (beyond $45) from that week go into his/her individual Sr. Youth Savings Account, which helps pay for trips to servant events and the National Youth Gathering. Not paying one week and paying double the next actually penalizes one youth and rewards another. We appreciate your contributions. Please continue to support our Sr. Youth while enjoying a tasty treat and hot cup joe! for of Stewardship-Time, Talents, Treasure, ...and (a)Ttention? A couple months ago, the Sr. Youth talked about the "3 T's" of Stewardship, and added a 4th, (a)Ttention. We're not truly giving our time if we're not giving our attention. We're physically there, but mentally elsewhere. This applies in our relationships with family, friends, and God. In order to give more attention to one another and to God, the Sr. Youth started having a "cell phone offering". Each week, to start off Sunday morning Bible study, a basket is passed around the room, and each person puts his/her phone in the basket. This helps everyone focus for the next hour. How can you give your (a)Ttention this week? 12 Last Chance Photo Op!!! Olan Mills will be here one more time and if you don’t have an appointment scheduled please do so as soon as possible. In this program donated books are sold at the grocery store’s entrance, $.50 for paperbacks and $1 for hard covers. Proceeds from the book sales are then donated to a different charity each month. In March Lindenwood Area Senior Ministry (LASM) was delighted to be chosen as the “Charity of the Month” for Schnucks’ Books for Charity Program! The funds raised by book sales helped cover the cost for the ministry’s annual senior dinner and dance. In order to pay this favor forward and to support the continuation of the Books for Charity Program, LASM will be hosting a book drive throughout the month of June. Please drop book donations in the box labeled Books for Charity at the back of church or you can drop your donation off directly at the Courtesy Counter of Schnucks (5055 Arsenal). Thank you! Thank You from LASM! A belated thank you to you and all the volunteers that helped on the May 21st service date. I've spoken to each homeowner who was assisted and they were all very appreciative of the help. It sounds like the volunteers really went above and beyond what was asked of them and got a lot accomplished! Andy Collins specifically wanted the group to know that "You are my angels!" Host Families Needed! Lutheran High School South is in need of ten families to host international students from China who will be attending LHSS this fall. Host families may have children of any age or no children; host families will be provided a stipend to cover costs.
