Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz
Masterclass
The Lied and the Chamber romance
Erling Ragnar Eriksen, piano
The Italo-Norwegian soprano Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz has sung worldwide in the most important
opera houses under the baton of conductors like Solti, Muti, Abbado, Maazel, paying nonetheless a
particular attention to the Lied of the Northern Europe (Austria, Germany, Norway, her homeland),
reaching the first rank among the interpreters of this repertoire.
In her career she has been deeply bound to Accademia Filarmonica Romana, as well as to many
celebrated international musical institutions.
This project will provide an intensive study of the Chamber Romance in several European countries
(France, Germany, UK, Italy, Scandinavia) on both aspects - musical and the text - focusing on the correct
interpretation of the words meaning and nuances.
Every day the students will have at least an individual half-an-hour lesson with Ms. Norberg-Schulz
and Maestro Eriksen in the Sala degli Affreschi and Sala Casella of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, in
its historical venue in via Flaminia. Four pianists of four different nationalities (German, Russian, Serbian,
Chinese) will accompany the students’ lessons.
At the end of the masterclass Ms. Norberg-Schulz will choose among the students those who will
sing in a concert dedicated to Lied and Chamber Romance, held at the Sala Casella on July 3rd, 2014.
To students attending the masterclass will be granted free access to all concerts of our summer
festival held from June 18th to July 4th, 2014 in via Flaminia.
The masterclass is open to all singers, no matter what vocal register, age or nationality. A preselection will be done on the basis of the material sent by candidates (audio-video, or performances
available online). The candidates will be invited to take part in an audition (held on June 27th at 10 am, at
the Sala Casella). As an exception, Scandinavian students will be selected by Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz and
Erling R. Eriksen in a special audition held in Norway.
For the Roman audition, candidates must prepare two chamber vocal pieces in two different
languages. The pieces must be clearly indicated in the application form.
The candidates must indicate whether they want to participate as active participants or listeners.
The masterclass can have maximum 14 active participants, chosen by Filarmonica Romana and Elizabeth
Norberg-Schulz. Candidates who will not be chosen as active participants may attend the masterclass, at
Filarmonica Romana’s discretion, as auditing participants.
The masterclass will be held in Italian, English, Norwegian.
