The COE in WATER is an innovative partnership with SUNY,
the local business community,
federal, state, and local governments, committed to stimulating
economic development and creating jobs in rural upstate New York,
while protecting the New York City
watershed and addressing SUNY’s
objectives for renewable energy.
The students were excited and very
interested in learning about the
major community issues going on
in Delhi and New York State. The
chance to display good citizenship
and show how proud SUNY Delhi
is to have our future leaders attend
this gathering was a major highlight for the Senator. Following
the press conference, photos were
taken and the group of students
presented special SUNY Delhi
EOP gifts to Senator Gillibrand.
Other programs like this are available for all of our students to be an
active part of. We look forward to
your participation in future programs.

SEPTEMBER 2013
An Important Message from President Candace Vancko
Many of you stop to say hello as I
walk my Golden Retrievers, Bella
and Scarlett, along Main Street
weekday evenings and on weekends. Thank you for the opportunity to meet you and to introduce
my beautiful “girls.” They love it
when you stop and pay attention
to them, and thank you for helping
me to make Bella sit before you
reward her with attention!
I spend quite a bit of time and
effort working on community
relationships - helping the Village
of Delhi and SUNY Delhi work
together on a variety of projects,
including the construction of the
information kiosk by the Delhi
Telephone Company. One thing
that makes me crazy and certainly
gives a negative image of our
campus to the village is LITTER!
I have defended our students to the
village on the issue of litter over a
long period of time. Since I walk
Bella and Scarlett in the village
year-round, I am very aware that
litter is a year-round problem and
doesn’t just exist when students
are on campus (people other than
students litter too). But, I have
to admit that the litter problem is
much worse when classes are in
session. And this fall litter has
become a pretty big problem.
I’m appalled and embarrassed by
the amount of litter, particularly
along Main Street in the block
between MacDonald’s and Bagels
N Cream.
Since the dogs are too big and
strong for me to walk them at the
same time, I walk them one-ata-time, using the Brown Athletic
Field parking lot as my start and
finish points. That means I walk
the block between MacDonald’s
and Bagels N Cream four times a
day. Litter is a big deal with me,
so when I am walking my dogs,
I carry a bag and pick up all the
litter I come across, depositing it
in appropriate receptacles. (There
are trash cans at the sidewalk by
Pizza Hut and the little park area
in front of Bagels N Cream). One
afternoon recently, I was very
upset when, after I picked up all
the litter in sight while walking
Scarlett, I found the sidewalk once
again covered with MacDonald
wrappers, straw covers, cups of
drinks, etc., when I returned to the
same block walking Bella, just a
short time later.
It’s VERY important that the
Village of Delhi and SUNY
Delhi have a good relationship. It
impacts how businesses treat our
students, how willing they are to
support student initiatives and
how college students are viewed
in general. One step we all can
take to demonstrate our respect
(and in my case, affection) for the
beautiful Village of Delhi is to
NOT litter EVER!!! AND when
you see litter, please take personal
responsibility and pick it up, even
if you did not throw the litter on
the ground. Research documents
that an individual is less likely to
litter when no litter is present. In
other words, people think it’s ok
to litter when they see litter on the
ground.
Please join me in helping SUNY
Delhi be a good neighbor. The
Village of Delhi is OUR home –
let’s treat it with respect and help
keep it beautiful for all of us.

mally tackles
such intricate and professional concepts for our future financial success.
It now has an ambitious plan to launch a win/win project called BIG
Discount Card. The plan is to produce a discount card for the merchants
of the Main Street in Delhi and make those cards available to the campus community. It is an effort to link the business community of Delhi
and the students and staff on campus much more closely than it has been
done before.

students were very
interested in joining BIG. I hope to
have a very productive semester
as the President of
this student organization.”
The Bronco Investment Group (BIG) Discount Card will be available
to students, faculty, and staff. The BIG Discount card will be sold at
$10 and will be usable until the end of the year, 2013. The owners of
the businesses that have admired our idea have offered to provide a
discount individually for our BIG Discount Card. It will be honored in
such businesses in Delhi as Cross Road Café, Cugino’s Pizza, Village
Pizzeria, Bagels-N-Cream, Blue Bee Café, Stewarts, Tuna III, and Streat
Foods. Over time, BIG will be striving to reach agreements with other
merchants so that the card will be bigger and better. We will keep track
of everyone who buys one and put some sort of identification method on
it for security purposes. At the end of the semester we will evaluate our
project and have the ones who purchased it fill out a survey.
The proceeds that BIG will make will be used for educational purposes
of the BIG members such as field trips, inviting guest speakers, and trying to bring new innovation to the Delhi community. BIG in the past
have visited NYSE in NYC, and has a plan to visit corporate headquarters of credit bureaus and housing mortgage companies.
I would like you to join our campaign by purchasing this BIG Discount
Card and also come to our weekly meetings on Tuesday’s at 5PM in
Farrell 211A. We are ambitious in learning to build wealth as well as
sharing that wealth with the community here and abroad. Get your BIG
Discount Card starting September 23, 2013 and Do it BIG!

Kappa Sigma Epsilon Brings New Events to Campus
“Food Revolution” Dinner Friday, October 4
Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk
Jimmy Russell, KSE
Anthony Impagliazzo, KSE Community Service Rep
Our fraternity has been hard at
work planning an event which
will be benefiting a cause that is
extremely worthy. Our first ever
“Food Revolution” dinner is going to be part of a movement that
is sweeping not only the country, but the entire world. Jamie
Oliver’s Food Foundation charity
has reached millions of people,
promoting the education of how
to achieve a simple healthy diet.
In result of his tireless efforts, he
has been combatting diet related
disease and obesity, which is the
number one killer of all people
in the United States. Much of his
work goes towards today’s generation of children. Kids are being
raised to be both overweight and
malnourished from an everyday
diet of processed foods, which is
causing them to be the first generation ever to live shorter lives than
their parents. There are too far
and few people that have inherited
proper cooking skills which are essential to living a healthy life. This
organization has been inspiring
change by means of thousands of
free cooking courses (for children and adults), changing school
cafeteria menus, constructing a
nationwide network of community
kitchens where anyone can go to
learn basic home cooking, and
much more.
The brothers of Kappa Sigma Epsilon enjoyed
a beautiful day and a great turn-out for the
launching of their 1st annual “Out of the
Darkness” suicide awareness and prevention walk. Fellow Greek Life organizations,
SUNY Delhi students and faculty teamed up
with folks from around the greater Delhi community to make the day a very special one.
The Heart of the Catskills Humane Society
was even engaged as the brothers from Kappa
Sigma Epsilon proudly walked a couple
canine friends throughout the event.
In addition to aiding this earnest
cause, we will also be contributing benefits from the dinner to go
to the local Town of Delhi Food
Pantry at the United Ministry
Church. We are very happy to be
able to help this local group of
great people in supplying fresh and
healthy food for those less fortunate in our community.
The 1st Annual “Food Revolution”
Dinner will be held on October
4th at 5:15pm in Alumni Hall at
SUNY Delhi. With the assistance
of both the Delhi Escoffier club
and Hotel Management Society,
we will be serving a four course
prix fixe meal with two different options for each course. It is
required that all guests must RSVP
by the 20th of September with
their menu choices, which are
listed below. 80 seats are available
for the dinner and the ticket price
is $50 per guest. Cocktail attire
is requested. There will also be a
silent auction with many remarkable prizes to bid on, along with a
50/50 raffle.
Hope to see you there!

thought we needed a little
info for those who stick

and incoming new games.
Sound good?
Oh, and if you want you

or anything game wise by

may see your request in
the next addition.
Now onto the good stuff:
reviews
Grand Theft Auto V:
Graphics? As good as
ever, but the gameplay is
by far what made this such
a great game. You pretty
much have freedom to do
whatever you want in this
game; be it missions or
just driving off buildings
like Evel Knievel (great
American daredevil guy,
come on). Not to mention this time Grand Theft
Auto added a “crew”
option, a cool multiplayer
you can get all your buddies in to. According to
Game Informer Magazine
this game got 9.0 out of 10.
Shadow Warrior: If you’re
into first-person shooter
games you might want
to give this baby a try.
Want to know what got
me interested? Having the
ability to choose from a
weapon range of guns…
or a Katana! Yes, please!
The game is vivid and has
an amazing design. You
ARE the elite weapon in
this game. This is available for PC, PS4, and
Xone. No ratings for this
one yet guys but I’m sure
it’ll be up there, was for me.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES FAIR 2013
Photos by Elizabeth Munoz
More than 40 clubs and Greek organizations of SUNY Delhi came out in full
force for the annual Student Activities
Fair held in the Farrell Center on September 19th. The 2013 theme, “Imagine the Next 100” asked fair exhibitors
to showcase the future of their respective clubs. The theme coincides with
the conclusion of a year-long campus
and community celebration in honor of
SUNY Delhi’s centennial anniversary.
What visitors to the Activities Fair,
mostly freshmen exploring their varied
options, got to experience was school
pride and the promise that awaits them
through Delhi’s many clubs which offer opportunities for extra-curricular
fun, additional exposure to academic
pursuits and the chance to significantly
enrich your college experience.

“I KNOW THAT VOICE”
Famed Animation Actor John DiMaggio to
Appear on Campus
October 16 at 7 p.m. in Okun Theatre
While the name John DiMaggio
may not be all that familiar to
everyone, we all know the voice of
DiMaggio. The former stand-up
comedian has become one of the
superstars of voice acting through
his multiple appearances on TV,
movies, and video games.
Jose
DiMaggio, is one of the stars of
the soon to be released feature film
“I Know That Voice”, that will
give viewers a behind the scenes
look at this unique group of actors
and actress who appear in many
major productions, but are never
actually seen on camera. John’s
presentation on campus will also
explore this special world, as well
as explain to everyone exactly
what goes into the making iof animated features and video games.
Formerly one half of the highly
successful comedy duo Red Johnny and the Round Guy, John began
his voice over career in the midnineties. For those two young to
have ever heard of Red Johnny and
the Round Guy, they were a unique
comedy team that combined both
comedy and rap into an amazingly
high energy performance. They
were only white comedy act to not
only survive, but win the Amateur
Night at Harlem’s famous Apollo
Theatre. After leaving the come-
dy stage, John also had major roles
in several television shows including Law and Order, and Chicago
Hope.
DiMaggio’s voice over credit
includes the voice of everyone’s
favorite robot Bender, from the
long running Futurama series. He
is also known for his work as the
Joker in “Batman”, “Scooby Doo”,
“Tom and Jerry”, “Under Dog”,
“Kung Fu Panda”, and “Transformers” , among many others.
Video game enthusiasts should
also be familiar with DiMaggio
because of his work on “Gears of
War”, “Spiderman”, “X-Man, Final Fantasy”, and countless others.

NYSAVT Expands
Brynna Elliott, NYSAVT Alternate Senator
This semester NYSAVT has dramatically increased in their membership. So much so, that we had
to move our meetings to a bigger
venue. The E-board team and I
are all very excited about this and
are ready for a great semester. We
have scheduled two dog washes
for the semester, on October 6th
and December 8th. The majority
of our members are freshman to
the Veterinary Science program, so
the dog washes will serve as both a
learning experience for them and a
great way to help the community.
Another benefit from our increased
membership is that we will be
able to continue our support to the
Heart of the Catskills Humane Society. One added way we are doing
this is by keeping a collection jar
for donation money in Farnsworth
hall. If you have an interest in contributing, please see Judy Wolfe.
On September 14th, a number of
our members went down to volunteer at the Woofs and Wags Dog
Walk, which is an annual event
that the Heart of the Catskills
Humane Society hosts right here
in Delhi. It was a great opportunity
for them to help out the Humane
Society that so graciously helps
our Veterinary Science program
every semester.

tunity to change that now that you’re at SUNY Delhi. Visit the Resnick Learning Center and find out
more about all the free tutoring services they offer

Reach Thousands from the Campus Community
Advertise in the SUNY Delhi Student Newspaper
Maybe you had some disciplinary issues before
you came to Delhi. We’ve all done things we regret. It’s called growing up. But now you’re in a
new community. You have a fresh slate and can put
any negative stuff behind you. To find fulfillment,
pursue some of the many options you have on campus to take part in activities, join a club or be part
of a team. Delhi has over 40 clubs, more than
a dozen recognized Greek organizations and awesome intramural sports. There’s nothing better
than being part of a greater whole and nothing that
can so positively (or negatively) affect you as the
company you keep. Taking part in something organized through campus will put you in good company. And who knows, as you take part in clubs or
on teams and pursue your particular interests, you
might even find yourself in a leadership position on
campus. These look great on your record, or more
professionally speaking on your resume. Think of
the new power you’ll have as you land a good job
after graduation and leave your past doubters and
haters in the dust.
SUNY Delhi’s student newspaper is a professionally printed, tabloid-sized publication that is printed monthly
while college is in session. 1,000 copies are distributed campus-wide and at select locations in the village of
Delhi. Each issue is also posted at http://www.delhi.edu/campus_life/campus_voice/.

Another great chance to re-invent yourself at
college is through community service. Delhi’s
O’Connor Center for Community Engagement is
nationally recognized and deserves to be. It offers so many worthy and diverse volunteer options
that truly and positively impacts others in need.
And guess what? When you volunteer for community service, this positive energy flows through
you too. I think Emerson would definitely consider
service to others an “advanced experience”. When
you focus on helping someone else it will give you
new perspectives, boost your self-esteem and chase
away your troubles. So contact OCCE to find out
how you can help make a positive difference. You
can even add your community service to your cocurricular transcript and earn awards for your service.

the many campuses representing
SUNY on the list. “As we continue
to work with Governor Cuomo to
position SUNY and New York to
lead in affordability, access, and
quality, and President Obama puts
these issues into focus nationally,
we are proud to be recognized and
ranked favorably by U.S. News &
World Report.”
The U.S. News rankings measure
academic quality by examining
seven broad indicator areas: peer
assessment; retention and graduation of students; faculty resources;
student selectivity; financial resources; and alumni giving. Indicators include both “input measures,”
which reflect the quality of students, faculty and other resources
used in education, and “outcome
measures,” such as graduation and
freshman retention rates, which
signal how well the institution educates its student body.
SUNY Delhi exceeded the State
University’s student success rate
for first-time, full time students
according to a report by the State
University’s Office of Institutional
Research and Analysis. The student success rate is defined by the
percentage of first-time, full-time
students who either graduate or
transfer to continue their studies at
Delhi. The State University Report
Card also reflected nearly 500 internships and cooperative education
opportunities for SUNY Delhi students and over 1,000 online course
selections offered at the college.
Congratulations to Business and Professional Golf Management (PGM) Program senior David Gennett for passing his PGA Playing Ability Test at Deer Park Golf Club
just north of Chicago on Friday September 5th with
scores of 76-74=150. This is a very important first step
to becoming a fully certified PGA Golf Professional.
David is currently doing his final internship through the
fall at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, IL.
In addition to its student success,
the college’s online RN to BSN
program, the first of its type in New
York State, continues to grow. The
program began with 20 students in
January 2008 and now enrolls over
600. This year, the RN to BSN program was ranked among the best
affordable online nursing programs
by Get Educated, a consumer’s
guide to online colleges.
SUNY Delhi has significantly expanded its baccalaureate offerings
by delivering degrees at Schenectady County Community College, Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, Onondaga
