Title: The Lord of the Flies
Opening - Pre-set plane, crash sequence
Cara.: Oh god
Lucia.: You there, boy, come here. I know you, you're one of the juniors aren't you. Come
on, fall in line.
Billy: I want my mummy
Lucia: You can stay there, or you can come with us
Jamie: I say, this is an island… or I think it is. We need to get to higher ground
Bea: How do you know it's an island?
Jamie: Because there's palm trees and it's surrounded by the sea
Carys: Oh shut up, who made you the Lord of the island?
Jamie: Oh shut up
Sophia: I'm hungry, I left my lunch on the plane
Dearbhla: Think I left half a ham sandwich in there, I'll go get it for you…. It's gone, or it got
swept away... Sorry
Ralph: It's amazing
Piggy: What's amazing?
Ralph: The sun
Piggy; I don't see what so amazing
Ralph: It's like a huge eyeball staring down at us
Piggy: It's hot, that's what it is
Ralph: Well if you're hot, there's lagoon over there. Why don't you go for a swim
Piggy: I can't swim. I sink
Ralph: What's your name
Piggy: I'm not going to tell you
All: Please,.. Tell us....
Ralph: Is it a secret?
All: Come on, tell us
Piggy: It's a stupid name anyway... Do you think they're all dead
Ralph: What?
Piggy: Well, the plane broke into two pieces
Ralph: They can't be
Izzy: My head hurts
Cara: I want to go home
Sophia: Where are we going to sleep?
Piggy: Asthma
Ralph: Huh?
Piggy: Asthma. That's why I can't swim, it’s really bad
Ralph: Do you?
Piggy: Yeah
Maya: Maybe they are all dead
Billy: Here, there everywhere, all over
Maya : The bombs could have killed everybody
Ralph: Don't be stupid, not everybody in the whole of England is dead, not everybody in The
whole of Great Britain, the whole British Isles.
Exploring – Improv Carys and Cara
Ralph: What’s this
Piggy: I don’t know
Ralph: It’s a massive shell
Piggy: I’ve seen one of those, at my Auntie’s house; I think it’s called a conch.
Ralph: You blow down it don’t you
Piggy: I can’t, my asthma
[blows raspberry]
Ralph: I bet there are more people, others, I bet if I blow it they’ll come
[blows conch, choir sing]
Jack: Fall in line. Where’s the man with the trumpet? Fall in line!
Abi: Or what Merridew?
Lucia: I’m hot
Jack: Who’s blowing the trumpet
Ralph: Me
Piggy: You're the choir
Jack: Yes
Ralph: You're good
Jack: We sung because we thought you were grown-ups, to get your attention
Ralph: You're good
Jack: I'm choir prefect, this lot are slackers, lazy slackers
Ralph: I’m Ralph
Jack: Merridew. This is Camborne, Sam and Eric and Henry, they're all slack beasts
Piggy: Shall I write everyone’s name down then?
Jack: Yes, we must have a system
Ralph: Look over there, there’s some little kids, I think I recognise them from the plane.
Jack: Yes, but no grown ups
Ralph: Let’s get them over here
Piggy: Do you think we should have a meeting?
Jack: Yes okay, let's have a meeting. What's your name anyway?
Ralph: He’s got a funny name
Piggy: Ralph, I told you not to tell
Ralph: What?
Piggy: You promised
Ralph: His name is Piggy in fact
All: laugh
Ioan: What do we want a meeting for?
Jack: We need to decide who’s in charge, I think I should be leader, I can sing a high C
All: Me me, etc etc
Piggy: What about Ralph, he’s got the conch after all
Ioan: Okay, Merridew or Ralph. Who votes for Merridew [they vote] and who votes for
Ralph? Ralph for leader!
Cara: What do we do first Ralph?
Ralph: I think our priority should be getting rescued; we need a fire built right up there at the
top of the mountain that will never go out
Izzy: Where will we sleep?
Ralph: We need to build shelters on the beach
Jack: My choir will be in charge of the fire, and we also hunt
Ralph: Right then, get to it. We need to have a fire lit by nightfall. It needs to be up there.
?: We need kindling
?: And big logs
?: We need green wood to make smoke
Sam’n’Eric: We can carry it, we're really strong
Ralph: We need all of those things, but more importantly we need matches
(look for matches)
Jack: Why don't we use Piggy's glasses
All: Yeah, go on.....
Piggy: They're mine, I need them to see
Rodger: Steal them off his face
Jack: I've got them
Fight and glasses smash
Piggy: You broke ‘em. You broke my glasses, I can't see without them
Ralph: what happened piggy?
Piggy: They broke my glasses
Ralph: It's only one side, would you mind if we use it to light the fire
Piggy: Alright Ralph I trust you, as long as you don't break the other side
Fire
Ralph: It's working
Billy: Do you think it'll get bigger
Izzy: Yes, it’s going to be massive (everyone joins in)
Percival: Was there a fire?
Ralph: There was, but it's gone now
Percival: My friend was sitting next to me on the plane
Ralph: Was he
Percival: Yes, but he's not here any more
Ralph: Isnt he
Ralph: No
Percival: I saw something
Ralph: Did you
Percival: Yes, I went into the trees and I saw something.
Ralph: Did you
Percival: Yes. The bombs, did they kill everybody? Do you think they killed our mums?
Ralph: No
Percival: But we were sent away because of the bombs
Ralph: Yes
Percival: I’m Percival Weams Maddison, The Vicarage, Harcourt St Anthony
Ralph: Good for you
Percival: And I went into the trees
Jack: He’s been into the trees he says
Percival: And I saw something
Ralph: What did you see?
Percival: A beast!
Ralph: Don’t be stupid, there’s no beast
Percival: I saw it! I went into the trees and I saw it
Ralph: I’m sure there isn’t anything. We’ve been up there and didn’t see anything. I’m sure
there’s nothing
Jack: He’s being stupid
Livy: Unless…
Jack: Unless what?
Maia: Nothing
Percival: There is a beast
Frankie: Why, why is there a beast?
Percival: Because I saw it
Carys: The suns starting to set, it’s going to get colder, where shall we sleep?
Ralph: Piggy, I’m sorry we took your glasses. I’m sorry I told them your name. Forgive me?
Piggy: Yes Ralph
Ralph: It’s just that we need to do things properly. We need to have guards, to look after the
fire, to make sure it doesn’t go out
Sam’n’Eric: We could guard the fire, we’re sensible and brave
Jack: Why are you listening to him? What’s so great about the fire anyway? What are we
going to do with it? What we need is sticks, like spears, to protect ourselves
Ralph: Now listen
Jack: No, you listen. You said I could have the choir, we need spears. I thought you were a
regular chap. We need a defence force
Ralph: We need…
Jack: We need something now, before something comes out of the trees
Piggy: Wait, if you want to talk, you need the conch
Jack: Give it to me. I want to speak. We need to get spears. It’s getting dark. We don’t know
what’s out there, but we’re not afraid of it! Are we afraid of it?
All: No!
Jack: Will we get spears
All: Yes!
Frankie: Kill the beast
All: Kill the beast, kill the beast
Ralph: Listen
Jack: No, you listen. You’ll speak when we get back
Hunting
?: It ran off, why didn’t you kill it?
Jack: I was just looking for the right place to stab. Next time, I’ll get it next time.
Eric: Sam, Sam? You’re sleeping
Sam: No I’m not!
Eric: You were, you were sleeping
Sam: Wasn’t
Eric: We’ve got to stay awake. Ralph says that the fire needs to be kept alight all the time
Sam: Get some wood then
Eric: Fine
Sam: Eric, are you scared?
Eric: NO!
Sam: You are, you’re scared aren’t you?
Eric: No
Sam: You’re scared of the beast, because it’s huge, and it’s got big teeth and massive claws
and it’s really hairy…. I think I just scared myself
Eric: Don’t worry, get some sleep. I’ll stay awake for a bit. Oh no, the fire! Sam, Sam!
Sam: What Eric?
Eric: Sam, it’s the beast
Sam: It’s not the beast Eric, go back to sleep
Eric: Sam, I want you to see this
Sam: Eric! I want to shout
Eric: Don’t shout
Sam: We need to tell the others
Eric: We need to move slowly, it might see us
Sam: We need to tell the others, I’m going to shout
Both: We need to tell the others
Eric: Do you think it’s safe yet? Can we shout?
Both: 3…2…1… The beast, we’ve seen it, it’s real etc etc
Eric: Jack, we might need those spears you were talking about
Jack: Okay, I’ll get the choir. Ralph, you need to stay here to look after Piggy, he can’t hunt.
(Pick up spears, into clockwise circle, stop together, turn in, sticks up, sticks in to hut, sticks
out to hunt position, everyone into crouch, sticks down to right.)
Simon Scene
Jungle sound cue
Simon:
My mind isn’t right. It isn’t. I’ll have one of my goes if I’m not careful. My mind.
Ralph?!
If Ralph was here… If Ralph was here, Ralph would know.
There isn’t a beast.
(pig masks in middle of the circle)
End jungle sound abruptly
Flies sound (not long enough, repeat)
3 pig masks
Simon:
It’s blood, and it’s flies. It’s blood. That head. That head. Merridew says that I
don’t pull my weight, funny, why should I pull weight, those flies. There’s
blood and there are flies.
There’s no beast! I need to tell Raplh. I need to tell Ralph that there isn’t a
beast. [exit]
Stick circle, killing of the beast
Tribal music
Music crescendo
(pick up sticks, walk in a clockwise circle, sticks go all the way up, stop, beat, heads, beat
sticks hit floor, come back into hunting position, small circle, all the way up sticks down
bounce out to individual stabbing)
Silence
Frenzy
Jack: See, it’s dead. It came out of the dark and now it’s dead
Ralph and Piggy
Piggy: Ralph, how long ago was it that we killed the pig?
Ralph: We didn’t kill the pig, they did. They killed the pig and put his head on a stake. Piggy
how long do you think we’ve been here.
Piggy: I don’t know, but a lot has changed hasn’t it? I mean, we used to go swimming. Why
don’t we go swimming any more.
Ralph: You can’t swim, your asthma.
Piggy: Sometimes I think that they’re watching us, from inside the trees. Do you think they
want the shelters back?
Ralph: I haven’t seen any smoke for a long time. Maybe their fire’s gone out. The storm
must have put the fire out. Sometimes I hear them in there.
BEAT
Piggy: Ralph, why do you think we did that thing?
Ralph: What thing Piggy?
Piggy: Was it us that did it, to Simon? (enter others) Do you think we killed him, Ralph?
Ralph: No of course we didn’t don’t be stupid.
Piggy: Do you think we could have stopped them? Do you think we are going to get in
trouble?
Ralph: No, shut up Piggy.
Jack: Give us your glasses Piggy
Piggy: They’re mine I need them to see.
Rodger: Steal them off his face (grab Piggy)
Ralph: Leave him alone can’t you
Jack: You standing up for your fat friend
Piggy: Is that you Ralph?
Ralph: Over here (piggy crawls to Ralph)
Rodger: No I’m over here (Piggy crawls to Rodger)
Jack: Yeah, the cliff, right to the edge (crowd around Piggy)
Ralph: Piggy!
?: He’s gone, over the cliff
Ralph: Murderers, Murderers, Murderers! There must be someone who…
Jack: What!
Ralph: There must be someone to, who comes, who comes to
Jack: There isn’t you know Ralph, There’s just you on the whole earth, there’s no one it’s
just you, everyone else is dead and gone.
Ralph: There must be someone, but if they come they’re probably the beast
Percival: It’s the beast, It’s the beast, It’s the beast
A: Ralph’s the beast
Sam’n’Eric: It’s the beast, Ralph’s the beast.
Officer: Who’s in charge here?
Ralph: I am
Officer: And what’s going on? What’s your name, you the one in charge? Cat got your
tongue?
Ralph: My name is…
Officer: What’s all this about a beast
Ralph: There was a beast and…
Officer: There was a what? A beast, are you playing a game?
Rodger: That’s right sir, a game
Ralph: There’s two dead, killed
Officer: Yes?
Rodger: He doesn’t know what he is saying sir.
Ralph: It was alright at first, I kept thinking about my father I thought he was going to come,
but he didn’t
Officer: I’ll get the others from the boat. We saw your smoke. I thought that a pack of British
boys, you are all British aren’t you?, would have put on a better show. Form a line! It was
just a game, wasn’t it, that was all eh?
Jack: Yes sir.
