This book comprises a collection of papers
presented during the first series of lectures,
bearing the same title, organized by the Royal
Łazienki Museum in collaboration with the
Institute of Art History of the University
of Warsaw in the years 2014–2015.
During these lectures, scholars presented to the
general public profiles of rulers of countries in
Enlightened Europe and discussed their
relationships with culture. A great deal of space
was also devoted to their aesthetic tastes and
views, which were often shaped by the influence of
advisors such as Denis Diderot, Voltaire,
Francesco Algarotti, and Christian Ludwig von
Hagedorn.
In this volume we can read not only about
the opening of a modern public museum
in the Holy See, the underrated patronage of Kings
George I and George II of Great Britain and
Ireland, an endowment by the last queen of Poland, Maria Josepha of Austria, the Stuarts or
rulers without a kingdom, as well as Frederick the Great’s passion for French culture.
Readers will also learn about the history of the formation of unusual collections, such as the
antiquities amassed by Pope Pius VI in the Museo Pio-Clementino, and properties, such as
Sansoucci, the former summer palace of Frederick the Great in Potsdam, still known today
throughout the world. The book also includes articles on the reform of the Uffizi Gallery in
Florence, the unusual ideas of Leopold III Friedrich von Anhalt-Dessau and the friendship of
King Gustav III of Sweden with artists.
