Melbourne Filmoteca was
created in 1999 by a small
group of cinephiles deeply
interested in Latin American
cinema, whose aim was to
showcase films from the
region. Today we are still
a film group run only by
volunteers, who concentrate
on screening films from
Spain, Portugal and Latin
America.
Independent and emerging
cinema from the region relies
on a solid media platform
such as Melbourne Filmoteca
to be exhibited to new
audiences and potentially
local film festivals and
distributors. This all happens
each month at one of the
most iconic venues in town,
the Australian Centre for the
Moving Image (ACMI).
In this program we strive
to curate films that truly
represent the diversity of the
multiculturalist experience

With scant resources and constant scrutiny from individuals
sympathetic to Pinochet’s totalitarian regime, including
ad agency colleagues and the secret police, this bold

government instigated change without resorting to violence
during the 1988 plebiscite with only 15 minutes of TV
