Second year maize harvest on the market.
The flow of maize from the production areas has intensified indicating the presence of newly harvested maize for the second
year’s season on the market. The previous week, maize was offered at two quality levels namely; old stock and new maize.
However, last week, maize was offered at one price level. Maize delivered in Kampala was registered from Busoga region,
Kigumba, Kyangwali, Kiboga, Masaka and Mubende. It was offered at Ugx.660-670/kg in Kisenyi. This has had an impact on the
maize flour price low to Ugx.68, 000/sack of Super Grade One flour while Grade One and half at Ugx.60, 000/per 50kgs sack,
wholesale price. It was also noted that maize bran cost Ugx.480/kg.
In Iganga, store owners/transit traders purchased maize at Ugx.550-600/kg farm gate price. Wholesale price was Ugx.680700/kg at different stores especially at Namungalwe. In Gulu, the newly harvested maize was offered at Ugx. 800/kg wholesale
price mainly due to high demand from buyers in the region. Maize flour sold at Ugx.1300/kg wholesale price. Elsewhere in
Masindi, particularly Diima sub-county, new maize was stocked at a cost of Ugx.500/kg farmgate price. Wholesale price was
registered at Ugx.600/kg. In Mubende, the current price was registered at Ugx.600/kg and the quality from the region is good
with plenty to be harvested this season. In Masaka, Grade One Posho cost Ugx.72, 000/50 kg sack wholesale price while Grade
One and half cost Ugx. 65,000 per 50kg sack.
The price of beans increased in the past week due to reduction in supply. In Kampala, Nambaale Long beans (Nabe 4) cost
Ugx.1300-1400 wholesale price while Nambaale short (Nabe1) cost Ugx.1600-1650/kg delivered mainly from Masaka and
Hoima. Kahuura beans (Rosecoco) were offered especially in Kisenyi Kafumbe Mukasa market at Ugx.1550/kg delivered from
Mbarara and Hoima. Both short and long yellow beans sold at Ugx.1600-1700/kg wholesale price. The inferior mixed beans
were sold cheapest at Ugx.1000-1200/kg in Owino market, Kampala. In Gulu, yellow beans were sold at a wholesale price of
Ugx.1800/kg. Short and Long Nambaale beans sold at Ugx.1600-1700/kg. Plenty of beans have been harvested in Masindi
where yellow beans sold Ugx.1500/kg farmgate price while short Nambaale beans (Nabe 1) sold at Ugx.1300 farmgate price.
Harvesting of fresh beans and Irish potatoes are going on in Kabale and the price of mixed beans was recorded at Ugx.1400/kg
while Kigome beans sold at Ugx.1700/kg. A sack of Irish potatoes weighing 130 kgs cost Ugx.50, 000 from Kabale. In Masaka,
yellow beans were offered at wholesale price of Ugx.1450/kg while Nambaale beans was offered at Ugx.1500/kg.
The Simsim harvest has opened in Lira, Oyam and Apach. Its supply has had an impact on its price low, where it was bought at
Ugx.3700/kg in Lira.
