FoodFest, Solar Energy, Seasonal Staff, Student Housing Businesses

Hello Business Owners,
New Rochelle is in the midst of a series of events intended to bring excitement and attention to our
city. Sponsored by the College of New Rochelle, the Street Fair on Sept. 18 included over 150 vendors,
crafters and food providers, many of whom were our local businesses. The day was a big success and
thousands of visitors enjoyed all the fair had to offer. On Sept. 14 the Chamber of Commerce hosted a
valuable Small Business Expo and Sept. 15 was Community Capital’s first session of the SCALE workshop
for Spanish-speaking business owners. FoodFest is happening now through Thursday at 35 participating
local restaurants.
If you have any business news you would like for me to share, please call or email me.
Also remember we have the brochure rack at the New Rochelle train station to share information with
the many visitors to the train station. Drop brochures to me at City Hall, Development Office to post
at the station.

Business Resources
Solar energy for commercial properties: Solar energy is growing and provides the opportunity for
businesses to reduce operating costs, lock in energy costs and decrease your carbon footprint. At the
recent Chamber Small Business Expo, I learned about a solar energy brokerage for businesses. SolarKal
works with many vetted solar project developers, which allows them to offer your business a wide
variety of solutions. If you are interested in learning about using solar for your business property,
please contact [email protected] or New Rochelle’s Director of Sustainability and Planning,
Nina Arron.
Hiring seasonal staff: I found this article about regulations concerning seasonal workers useful for the
upcoming holiday season.

Code Enforcement
In July, the City of New Rochelle enacted a new law regulated the leasing of properties to students. All
owners of one-family, two-family, three-family or multiple-family dwellings that house three (3) or more
students attending or registered to attend a college or university, or who are on a semester or summer
break from studies at a college or university, are required to register by Sept. 30, 2016. Property owners
should visit www.newrochelleny.com/studenthousing to register.
