BIRDHOUSE CATEGORIES The sky is the limit! Be creative! Oregon Park District Your birdhouse can be a traditional or an original design. You may purchase an unfinished birdhouse kit from a store and build and/or decorate it. However, we encourage creativity and design and hope for entries made from your own blueprints, replicas of historical buildings (or your home) and other works of art. Part of the judging score will be based on originality and creativity. BUILD-A-BIRDHOUSE CONTEST Functional Birdhouse: must meet specific requirements of the Winter 2014-Spring 2015 particular bird for which it was built and constructed of non-toxic materials that can withstand elements outdoors. It must be able to be mounted and have easy access for cleaning. A door on the back or underside is recommended so that old nesting material can be cleaned out. Avoid the area where the house would be mounted. Decorative Birdhouse: can be used indoors or outdoors and are not necessarily functional. You are limited only by your imagination. “Green” Birdhouse: should address such terms as “environmentally friendly”, the concept of “recycle”, and “sustainability”, “renewable resources”, “non-toxic”, or “energy conservation”, “Green” birdhouses can be functional and/or decorative. Who can enter: This competition is open to non-professional artists and woodworkers of all ages. 2. Cost: This is a FREE contest. However, the purpose of the competition is also to acquire community art for the parks. All entries will become the property of the Oregon Park District with some being selected for use at various park locations. 3. Entry: The completed entry form attached and the birdhouse must be submitted by April 1, 2015. 4. Category: Each house can only qualify for one category. See complete category descriptions on the back of this flyer. 5. Judging Criteria: Entries in each category will be judged on: *Overall appearance *Creativity, imagination, originality *Precision of craftsmanship *Special requirements for each category Judging will take place the week of April 13. 6. Disqualification: Birdhouses made by someone else, used birdhouses or finished products purchased from a store will NOT be accepted. All entries must be in good taste. Parents are encouraged to supervise children while making their house and should assist young children with the use of power tools. 7. Winners: Announcements of winners will be made on April 22—Earth Day! Prizes will be modest with placards made identifying the builder for the winning entries chosen to be on display or used within the parks. Winners will also be recognized at the Oregon Park District May Board Meeting. 8.
