Jonathan Lu, Karissa Chan, and Annaka Besaw
January 27, 2009
Kiwanis Club of Temple City was pleased to have honored three outstanding students from
Longden Elementary School on January 27, 2009. Pictured with the proud students is Longden
teacher, Ms. Samantha Jennings.
Jonathan is 11 years old, has an older brother and enjoys anything electronic, including
computers. Jonathan said, “The best things about Longden are receiving a good education, the good
teachers, classmates, and environment.” The best thing that ever happened was being born.
Personal goals are to build a machine that can burn plastic without harming the world, get good
grades, have good health, and have a happy life.
Karissa is 11 years old and enjoys track and field, hanging out with her friends, playing piano,
and writing. Karissa said, “The best things about Longden are seeing my friends every day, the nice
fields and playgrounds, and the wonderful teachers. Personal goals are to get the President’s Award,
make the world a safer environment, and to tour the world and study different cultures.
Annaka is 11 years old, has a brother and sister and enjoys playing the piano and cello,
crafts, playing with her siblings, and participating in Longden’s Drill Team. Annaka said, “The best
things about Longden are helping in the Kindergarten, hanging out with my friends, and all the
wonderful teachers.” The best thing that ever happened is being a big sister. Personal goals are to
build an educational amusement park, to stop her school from cussing, to get good grades, and to
practice her instruments more. Local attorney and Annaka’s grandfather, John Shaw was in
attendance to witness her receiving her award.
Each week the Temple City Kiwanis Club is pleased to recognize outstanding students and
their teachers from Cloverly, Emperor, Longden, and the Dr. Doug Sears Learning Center. Kiwanis
treats students and their teacher to lunch. Students receive a certificate, a letter for their parents, a
bumper sticker, a gift certificate from The Hat Restaurant, and a photograph of them receiving their
award. Their photo will also be published in Temple City Life, Temple City Tribune, Mid Valley News,
and displayed in the Temple City Unified School District lobby.
Temple City Kiwanis has been serving our community since 1939. Members are dedicated
men and women who desire to make a difference in the quality of life for the youth of Temple City.
