Purpose
This unit standard is generic for people who work or intend to work in any sector.
Credits to this unit standard recognises the ability to manage oneself in the work
environment.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
 Maintain personal hygiene and acceptable appearance
 Show professionalism in the workplace
 Demonstrate knowledge of time management
Special notes
1. General Information
i. Assessment requirements for this unit standard must be both theoretical
and practical.
ii. Legislation and Policy documents cited in these Generic Unit Standards
have been guided by the Laws of Botswana and various other international
industry policies. However, these standards are cognisant of the fact that
Private Organisations and Parastatals in Botswana have their own policies
and guidelines that govern their day-to-day business.
iii. “Workplace” is a work setting in general or any environment enabling work
to be done. These include but are not limited to indoor and outdoor facilities
such as offices, factories, workshops, homes, warehouses, farms,
wholesale and retail outlets and institutions.
2. Range statements
i. Professionalism includes but is not limited to dress code, posture,
grooming, verbal and non-verbal communication in accordance with the job
requirements.

i. Etiquette refers to rules governing socially acceptable behaviour

Respect for oneself, others and property is maintained in line with the
organisation's requirements.
2.2.
Communication etiquette is maintained to acceptable organisation's
requirements.
2.3.
Quality of work produced is in line with organisation's requirements.
Element 3
Demonstrate knowledge of time management
Performance criteria
3.1.
Priorities are established in terms of their importance and urgency in
meeting own and group goals in line with organisation's requirments.
3.2.
Immediate attention is given to important and urgent matters in line with
organisation's requirements.
3.3.
Important but not urgent matters are attended to in order to arrest the
situation before it becomes an emergency.
3.4.
Methods which assist in dealing with priortities are demonstrated.
3.5.
Methods which minimise the amount of time spent on non- urgent matters
are demonstrated.
