Avalanche danger forecast for Sunday 1/8/2017
AVALANCHE DANGER
Moderate/strong winds from N: new accumulations possible along the ridges border.
Because of the very strong w inds, the avalanche danger is 2-moderate along the bordering areas w ith France and Sw itzerland and in the
Gran Paradiso Valleys, 1-low elsew here.
The danger is given by the snow drift accumulations: some new accumulation mainly localized in gullies and slopes just below the ridges and
passes, above 2300-2500 m, at all aspects, especially along the alpine ridge and in areas where there is still old loose snow that can be
dragged.(Gran Paradiso Valleys).
The passage of a single skier could trigger slabs of small size, especially where the new accumulations lay on old and smooth melt-freeze or
wind crusts.
The slabs are not widespread and often recognizable and therefore easy to avoid: in case of avalanche involvement, the greater risk is slip
and to suffer injuries caused by the impact against outcropping rocks.
Avalanche dange r tre nd: steady, the w ind still moderate / strong can make some small loads at high altitude.

GENERAL CONDITION
updated at 1/6/2017
Weather and snow.
Along the ridge of the border with France and Switzerland yesterday was a dusting of new snow of about 10-15 cm at 2000 m. The wind, even
very strong, has eroded (even down to the ground), sublimated and in part loads snow into small slabs very widespread and clearly visible
under the ridges, in channels and on steep open slopes mainly along the foreign border ridge. Snow cover: currently is poor: in the sun is
continuous from 2200-2800 m; in the shade you can already put on your skis from 1700-1900 m. The snow quality is not the best, they are
mostly crusts, melt and freeze on steep slopes in the sun, from the wind to other aspects, in sheltered areas, you can still find loose snow. At
high altitude ridges are eroded, windswept slopes characterized by very hard surfaces smooth and carriers, but also with sastrugi and loads
very hard. In the areas affected by the feeble snowfall you must be careful not to slide on hard surfaces hidden by fresh snow. Stability and
ski condition.
The type of snow is very varied, not always easy and pleasant to ski, mainly characterized by unbreakable hard crusts.
The current drop in temperatures, with return to more winter values, thanks to the strong thermal gradient, is drying the snowpack and
breaking up the crusts formed during the past two weeks: this leads to a reduction of internal stresses resulting in further improvement of
bonds with the old layers of the snowpack; at the same time, however, from a skiing point of view, the basal snow pack layer is becoming
loose, increasing the possibility of touching the hidden rocks.
During ski-tours is therefore useful to have rampant or crampons (slipping hazard) and helmet (danger of banging
against the outcropping, hidden, rocks).
