Why was England the First to Industrialize?
Reason #1: Labor
England had a large population of workers. Due to the improvements in agriculture, people ate more
healthy food which resulted in a population increase. Also, new inventions in agriculture meant that many
workers were displaced. A job in the field that might take dozens of men could now be done by a single
machine. These farm workers found themselves out of a job and in search of new ones in urban factories.
Reason #2: Geography & Natural Resources
England had plentiful natural resources such as coal and iron. In addition, England has many rivers
and harbors that make it easy to transport finish goods. Because England is separated from continental
Europe, English soil never experienced any devastating foreign wars.
Reason #3: Government
England had a stable government. England had a constitutional monarchy with a Parliament to
represent the people. Parliament passed laws that protected businesses and encouraged economic growth.
Reason #4: Capital
England had many business people who were willing to use their money to invest in new inventions.
They hoped that by investing their money, they would make a profit. English banks lent money to those
wanting to open factories. Entrepreneurs were able to get loans to start businesses.
A population increase and new technologies in
agriculture led to an increase in factory labor.
England was rich in natural resources and
transportation routes making production cost less
and readily available to consumers.
