Singapore Armed Forces Central Band
Formed in 1994, the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band is the premiere band of the Singapore Armed
Forces. The band embodies a core group of dedicated professional musicians, supplemented by musically
precocious servicemen fulfilling their two-year military service liabilities.
Comprising professional musicians, the SAF Central Band spontaneously assumes required configurations,
a testament to its players’ virtuosity. The band plays the role of a wind orchestra, a marching display band and a
ceremonial band. Other arrangements include wind ensembles, chamber ensembles, a ceremonial fanfare trumpet
consort and Big Band.
Thus far, the band has worked with distinguished conductors, composers and instrumentalists. The list
includes: Conductors Frank Renton, Toshio Akiyama, Naoya Takizawa; Composers ITO Yasuhide, Eric Whitacre, Jan
Van der Roost, Philip Sparke, Frank Ticheli, James Barnes; Instrumentalists Steven Mead (euphonium), Toru Miura
(euphonium), Steve Rosse (tuba), Jeremy Monteiro (piano) and Evelyn Glennie (percussion).
The band endeavors to increase its presence nationwide and connect with the heartland, creating a greater
musical awareness in the local community. The local public perceives the band, predominantly through its yearly
presence at the National Day and Singapore Armed Forces Day Parades. Apart from its state ceremonial duties, the
band supports manifold military functions and parades, does public concerts and co-organizes a plethora of
community and annual charity productions. The band is also actively involved in the National Arts Council’s Arts
Education Program, performing extensively at schools and institutions, infusing students with a zeal for music.
It has unceasingly been the band’s objective to make band music more accessible to the general public,
accomplished elevated professionalism and inspire the people. Through the widely received ‘In Harmony’ concert
series, the band performs an array of wind band music from its extensive repertoire.
The year 2005 finds the SAF Central Band on its impetus to excel musically and invoke global awareness. This
year, the band will participate in the 12th World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE)
International Conference. The band seeks to break the very barriers that circumscribe its potential to be a global
icon. It also hopes to be able to hold its own on the international platform, and to be in a capacity to sway a great
following to its tune.
