Registration Form - Forest Landowners of California

INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY
DIRECTIONS
We will visit two properties at this Field Day on
September 12 – Plantation Tree Farm and Timber Dell
Ranch, both near Santa Rosa, CA.
Starting point to check in and sign waivers is 35500 Hauser
Bridge Road. From Santa Rosa, take the River Road exit from
101 and head west for about 40 miles. In the town of Jenner,
River Road will merge with Highway 1. Proceed north on Highway 1 to Meyers Grade Road (approximately 10 miles). Turn
right on Meyers Grade Road for 14 miles to the intersection of
Hauser Bridge and Kruse Ranch Road. Stay right at this intersection and it is the first driveway on the left. RPF Matt Greene
will be facilitating the Field Day and his cell phone is the best
way for people to find the location if lost: (707) 847-3761.
PLANTATION FOREST
The property was purchased in 1952 by Abe and Eve
Crittenden. The property was the location for their
summer camp for children to learn outdoor skills:
riding horses, swimming, canoeing, build fires and
other skills that they would need to survive and thrive
as adults. The forest is still used to this day as the site
for 200 plus campers each summer.
Forestry work began in 1962 for the Crittenden Family
and in 1968 they had their first timber harvest. They
have been harvesting every year sustainably since.
While Ed Tunheim and Jim Greig have been managing
the property since 1962, in 1985 they bought the forest
and have been managing it as their own vision of
forestry ever since. The Brown Family took the reins of
the Summer Camp and portioned off the 30 acres
where the majority of the camp activities occur. There
is a working Non-Industrial Timber Management Plan
on the property, which has been in place since 1999.
TIMBER DELL RANCH
Timber Dell Ranch is a family-owned 160 acre forest.
The Forest was purchased by the Ed Cockrum Family
in 1938. It has been in the family ever since. No
harvesting has occurred on the ranch since the original
old growth was logged, however, the landowners have
become recently involved in fuel management to
protect their forest.
In 2009 the ranch was the site of a 10-acre fuel break
project that used masticators, along with hand
equipment to remove incredibly dense vegetation. The
brush was more than 10 feet tall and the property was
also being overrun by Sudden Oak Death. The fuel
break work that was done mimicked a low intensity
fire and opened up the forest. Now 6 years later,
attendees will see what the site looks like, what is
being done as follow up (herbicide is not an option in
this case), and what is being planned for the future.
This is one of the GHG Fuel Reduction Sites that is
currently being considered by CalFire and Air
Resources Board (ARB).
