GOAL
To determine several properties about the diagonals of a kite and
their relationship to the area
Activity
1
Construct kite ABCD (see figure). Use the software’s grid feature and
place vertex A at 1, 0, vertex B at 0, 1, vertex C at 2, 0, and
vertex D at 0, 1.
2
Construct the diagonals of the kite, AC and BD.
3
Draw E, the point of intersection of AC and BD.
4
Measure the lengths of AC, BD, AE, EC, BE, and ED.
5
Drag a vertex of kite ABCD and observe the results.
B
A
C
D
Exercises
1. Make a conjecture about the segment lengths of the diagonals.
2. Write an expression for the area of triangle ABC.
Lesson 6.7
3. Write an expression for the area of triangle ADC.
4. Use the results of Exercises 2 and 3 to write an expression for the area of

this kite. Compare your result to Theorem 6.24.

SKETCHPAD
1. Turn on the axes and the grid by choosing Snap To Grid from the Graph menu.
Choose the segment straightedge tool.
Draw a segment from 1, 0 to 0, 1.
Draw a segment from 0, 1 to 2, 0.
Draw a segment from 2, 0 to 0, 1.
Draw a segment from 0, 1 to 1, 0. Label the vertices.
Choose the text tool. Label vertex 1, 0 A, label vertex 0, 1 B, label vertex 2, 0
C, and label vertex 0, 1 D.
Turn off the axes and the grid.
Choose Hide Axes from the Graph menu.
Choose Hide Grid from the Graph menu.
2. Choose the segment straightedge tool and construct the diagonals of the kite,
AC and BD.
Lesson 6.7
3. Choose the point tool and draw E, the point of intersection of AC and BD. Relabel
the point using the text tool, if necessary.
4. Measure the lengths of AC, BD, AE, EC, BE, and ED.
Choose the selection arrow tool and select AC. Then hold down the shift key, select
BD, and choose Length from the Measure menu.
To measure AE, select A, hold down the shift key, select E, and choose Distance
from the Measure menu.
Repeat this process for EC, BE, and ED, making sure that you have only selected
the endpoints of the segment you are measuring.
5. Use the translate selection arrow tool to drag a vertex of kite ABCD.
