Civilian Conservation Corp Shelter/Grove and Monument in South

The above photos are of a monument that the people of Allegheny County had
erected in honor of the officers and enlisted men who were from the Pittsburgh
area whom served in the Spanish-American War. April 27th 1893 to October 22nd
1893.
The names of the officers are listed on the monument for all to see.
This monument can be found on Corrigan Drive across the street from the
black ‘n gold play ground just down from the big round horse barn.
This grove is the last or one of the last groves in South Park built by the CCC
campers created by President Franklin Roosevelt in March 1933. He created this
project with the intention to promote environmental conservation and to build
good citizens through vigorous disciplined outdoor labor. The young men
earned $30 a month of which $25.00 was sent back home to their family.
Roosevelt’s Tree Army lived in camps under quasi-military discipline across
rural America.
This shelter is located on Corrigan Drive across from the big horse barn next
to the Spanish-American War Monument.
