CRCT Information Skills Quiz—See if Your Teacher Knows
(1) John’s teacher told him his writing would be more exciting if he would quit using the same word over
and over in his writing. She told him to use a __________ to find words that mean the same thing. He
looked up the word “buy” and found the words: purchase; acquire.
(2) Becky overheard her mother talking about her history teacher. Her mother said, “Ms. Korea sure was
fastidious in her grading of Becky’s report on Harriet Tubman.” Since Becky was not sure of the
meaning of “fastidious”, she went to the bookshelf and pulled out a _______________.

(3) Deanna’s teacher asked her to prepare a written report about the life of President Abraham Lincoln.
When she arrived at the library she walked over to the “Reference” Section to find an encyclopedia.
Deanna remember that Mr. Lashley had told her that encyclopedias provide lots of facts about famous people, places, and topics. She remembered that an encyclopedia is made of lots of different
volumes, but she could not remember which letter volume she needed? Do you know which letter
volume she should use? Which one? _____
(4) Judy’s parents just bought her a Persian kitten and told her that she would need to take care of it. She
went by the school library and found a book entitled, “Cats of the World.” Mr. Lashley told her she
would have to use it in the media center because she already had a book checked out. She was upset ... her teacher had given her only ten minutes to come to the library. Because she could not read
the whole book, she quickly turned to the back of the book to the ________ and looked up “Persian”
cats to see what page had information about that specific type of cat. She quickly made a few notes
on her notebook and hurried back to class.
(5) Mr. Jones , a farmer, is thinking about planting a crop and needs to know what the weather
will be like three months from now. What would be the best place to look for future
weather predictions?
(6) The local radio station is giving away a prize to the first caller who can tell them who won
the Super Bowl last year. Dan went to the media center and asked Mr. Lashley if he had the

Math Matter
Test taking can be stressful, but using these test taking strategies can be beneficial for both students and teachers.
Mrs. Paula Johnson,
Performance Learning Coach
Spring is the time of year when students begin to get restless. The end of the year
is in sight, and summer vacation is just weeks away. Unfortunately, this is also the
time of year when we begin state testing. We spend all year preparing our students
for these tests. They are often used to determine a student's class placement for the
next year, and are used for school rankings. It is sometimes difficult to motivate students to take these high stakes test, especially in the spring-time when the weather is
nice, and most students would rather be outside enjoying the warmer weather.
In order to get the students excited, and in “test-taking” mode, we try a few different tactics to get them prepared. The first order of business is to help students understand the importance of the test. Students need to be aware of the effect these tests
can have on their future. Students are more likely to buy into testing if they understand why it is important. Another thing to address is how to read the different test
questions. Students need to get accustomed to key phrases that can help them identify
the type of test question they are answering. For instance, when working on a math
test, students can infer that when a question calls for a “product” most likely they
will be asked to multiply.
Many students rush through the test. Testing is often a nerve-wracking and
stressful time for teachers and for students. Encouraging students to eat a good breakfast before school helps in maintaining focus during the test. As we prepare for testing, parents help us stress the importance of student performing to the best of their
ability. Thanks for your continued support as we strive for new academic goals.

Mrs. Mary Ann Miller
My name is Mary Ann. I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia.
I have been married to my husband, David, for fifteen years.
We have four children and eleven grandchildren. I have a
B.S. in Public/Human Service and A.S. in Education. I will
receive my Master’s in Early Childhood Education in May.
Prior to working in Education, I worked as a secretary for
twenty years and decided to go back to school and pursue a
more fulfilling career. I have worked and volunteered in the
Bibb county school system for almost three years. I started
out as a volunteer and that led to my current position as a
paraprofessional. My job as a paraprofessional allows me to
get hands on classroom experience while pursuing my Master
degree. I love the field of education because I want to make a
difference in the lives of our children. In my spare time, I
enjoy reading, baking and spending time with my family.
