Parents' voices matter. The Partnership Attitudes Tragking Study (PATS) by the Partnership at
Drugfree.org reports that 85% of children say that their parent's attitude and conversations about
drug use are what prevented them from trying drugs. The average age of a child's first alcoholic
drink is 8-12, and the average age of a teenager's first experimentwith marijuana is '13. According
to the PATS survey, the percentage of parents of high school students who have reported having
discussions with their children about using prescription medicine to get high has.been steadily
declining. Don't wait to talk to kids about substance use until you think they are."old enough."
Educate yourself now on how to identify if a chlld you care about is exhibiting signs of possible drug
or alcohol abuse.
