Cal Adventures Youth Programs Summer 2013 Growing Outdoor Recreation Professionals (GORP) Leadership To Work Program Web site: www.oski.org 510.643.CAMP E-mail: [email protected] Thank you for your interest in the Cal Adventures Growing Outdoor Recreation Professionals (GORP) Leadership to Work Program. This program is designed for teens who have completed 9th – 12th grade, and who have had previous outdoor recreation and leadership experience. COMPLETE APPLICATION INCLUDES: You must send all the application materials in one envelope. Incomplete applications will be delayed and may not be considered. Two Reference Forms (attached) GORP Questionnaire (attached) Please Note: This year you will be able to register online for the GORP Program. If you are accepted, you will be sent a link and a code to complete the online enrollment form, and make your payment. WHAT IS GORP? Traditionally, it's short for "Good Ole Raisins & Peanuts", but for here at Cal Adventures, it’s also "Growing Outdoor Recreation Professionals". Just like GORP keeps you going on your outdoor adventures, so too do we hope GORP will keep young people going on their journey in the field of Outdoor Recreation. GORPs learn effective leadership skills that can be used throughout their life, and learn how to work with children at camp and in many other settings. Each session is unique and GORPers benefit from multiple sessions and even years in the program. Their day includes teambuilding activities and leadership lessons based on a national teen leadership curriculum. Various parts of the day involve working directly with campers. On the Applicant Questionnaire, GORPers select which camp they would like to be placed in: Sailing, Windsurfing, Paddling, Rock Climbing or Discovery/Afternoon Adventures. The GORPers’ schedule will vary based on the camp and their actual ability to work with children. The GORP program is limited in enrollment to about 12 students. Successful GORPers will: Develop outdoor recreation leadership skills Develop outdoor recreation safety management skills Learn to assist instructors in your chosen specialty Learn to write and execute a lesson plan Become familiar with Child Development Theories WHO DOES WELL AS A GORP? This program is for young people who are highly motivated, ready to work and play hard, and who demonstrate additional responsibility in accepting the challenges of leadership. There are a limited number of spaces and an application is required. Not all who apply are accepted into the program and all GORPers who complete the program are not necessarily asked to return a second year. A qualified GORP applicant will be outgoing, mindful of safety, and realize he or she is a leader and a role model rather than a fellow camper. Successful GORPs are individuals who are able to do work without being told and use good judgement. They also realize that developing leadership skills takes time and a willingness to seek out feedback to improve. 2013 SCHEDULE, FEES, & LOCATIONS Session Dates & Fees Session 1 June 17 - 28 Session 2 July 1 - July 12 (no camp July 4) Session 3 July 15 - 26 Session 4 July 29 - August 9 Days & Times & Locations Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM (8:00am for Sailors) Cal Adventures Youth Camps 124 University Ave, Berkeley, CA 94710 $250 per session ($225 session 2) APPLICATION PROCEDURES To facilitate the processing, please submit all materials in one envelope.
