The PIPELINE
STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES PROGRAM - UH HILO
Student Support Services Program -SSB Rm 211
After a brief absence the Student Support
Services Program (SSSP) Newsletter has
returned to print this Spring. This newsletter is one of many ways that the staff
would like to continue to have an open
dialogue with SSSP participants.
.
There is a wealth of services that we can
provide and at the heart of our services
lies the desire to help students reach their
goal of graduating with their bachelor’s
degree. This partnership between our students and our staff is essential in providing services. Students’ voices must be
heard and your presence felt in the office. We cannot do it without you! We
would like to know how we can help,
whether it is improving the “nuts and
bolts” of academic life, such as studying skills, time-management, writing,
test-taking, tutoring and seeking financial aid or just to talk about the personal side of life that greatly impacts
students on a daily basis, such as one’s
habits, motivation, family and friends.
.
Our newsletters will also showcase
more of our UH Hilo SSSP participants
and tutors. It is our hope that their stories...their voices will be heard by you
and inspire you to persevere in your
journey to your tomorrow.

known as SSSP since its inception nearly 18 years
ago. As a federally-funded TRIO program we
would like our name to reflect the mission and
services we offer. We will still maintain and continue to use SSSP, but it will be used as a sub

UH HILO FALL 2005 GRADUATES
STUDENT VOICES
Majuro, the Republic of
Marshall Islands is home to
recent UH Hilo graduate,
Cecilia Heine (Ceci). Majuro is located in the central
Pacific, approximately 2,200
miles west of Honolulu or a
five-hour jet flight. It’s comprised of 29 atolls spread
over 750,000 square miles. Cecilia Heine, BA Anthropology & Political Science
Ceci is the first in her

mother’s and father’s family to attain a bachelor’s
degree - a first generation college student. She is married to Frederick Heine; they have two young children, 3 and 2 years old.
Raised in a traditional Marshallese culture where women were
highly regarded, Ceci was inspired to study government. She hopes
that her education will be a vehicle that can help her influence
change and strengthen her country’s government economy in a
positive way. She attended UH Hilo right after graduating from
Xavier High School and was immediately faced with two big challenges: finding a place to live and Hilo’s rainy weather. The good
news was that she eventually found a place to live off campus with
a friend and she got well acclimated to Hilo’s rain. Ceci graduated
this past fall 2005 semester with a double-major in Anthropology
and Political Science and also made the Dean’s List. Janis
Shirai, her SSSP counselor, says of Ceci, “she has the ability to be
a real advocate, a voice for Pacific Islanders”. (16306221)
