The Confucius Institute at PSU Presents Lecture: This lecture begins with a brief visual presentation covering the history of Chinese art over the past century, discusses the major western influences absorbed by Chinese artist through historical/cultural exchanges and conflicts resulting from religious, economic and hostile interactions with foreign powers. The discussion offers detailed, historically contextualized analyses, supported with visual references of artwork to illustrate each key art-movement. The presenter will interpret each movement from its inception to its end, including the transformations from one movement to another. The main goal of this talk is to help audiences develop a more comprehensive picture of the core of Chinese visual culture, through an objective understanding of the inner coherence and causal logic of modern Chinese history. By exploring how modern Chinese history, which has primarily been a social, political and economic construct, crucial questions will be raised about the issues of debate underlying the artwork. .
