As at 15 July 2016, there were 52 children on Care and Protection Orders residing interstate.

Please indicate how many children on Tasmanian child protection orders are currently in
other states or territories participating in programs and provide details of the name of
each program and the cost for participation.
As at 15 July 2016, three children are currently in the Northern Territory engaged in the Brahminy
program. The fees for participation in this program are approximately $4 950 per week.
Of the remaining 49 children currently interstate, 22 are in kinship/family placements, 25 are in foster
care/guardianship placements and two are living independently.
Interstate foster care placements are at times utilised where a foster carer has moved interstate and the
child has been approved to move with them in order to maintain bond and attachment or when a child
has been deliberately placed interstate in order to have greater access to extended family networks.

Tasmanian child protection orders to reside in other states or territories.
According to the Instrument of Practice and Legal Delegations from the Child Protection Services Policy and
Practice Guidelines, depending on the age of the child or young person on child protection orders,
authorisation to reside in other states or territories can be provided by one of the following:

Manager, Child Protection

Director, Children and Families, or
Page 1 of 2

Deputy Secretary, Children.
Any child on an interstate CAPO has been approved by one or all of the three above positions.
