MELBOURNE CUP DAY PARTY Watch the Christmas tree being lit in King George Square 30 Nov Language Studies International 93 Edward Street GPO Box 2956 BRISBANE QLD 4001 Ph: +61 7 3221 6977 Fax: +61 7 3221 6861 Email: [email protected] Our students got an authentic Aussie experience on Melbourne Cup Day, and the race was just one of the many activities of the day. Maria Isabella was the winner of our funny hat contest, but it was a close one with different hats made from balloons, coloured paper, and even feathers! Our very own Melbourne Cup sweep was a huge success with 3 different sweeps going on. Each sweep had 3 winners, which means 8 lucky students had a bit of extra pocket money for the week and so did our very own Office Manager, Sandy, who rd won 3 place in the last sweep. The race was coupled with a traditional Aussie spread of sausage rolls, lamingtons, Cheerio sausages, and soft drinks to revive and refill students’ energy levels. All in all a memorable day for both staff and students! REMEMBRANCE DAY – 11 NOVEMBER Have you seen people wearing poppies just like the one in this picture and wonder why? The poppy is a symbol for Remembrance Day, which is a day to remember all the people who have fought in previous wars. It began as a day to remember the soldiers who fought in World War I, but now includes all wars. It is th held on 11 November because WWI officially ended ‘at the 11 th th hour of the 11 day of the 11 month. Poppies are used as a symbol because of the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ which talks about soldiers looking out at all the poppies that grew on some of the worst battlefields of WWI.
