Have a positive attitude...have fun but remember school comes first...stay organized...try your
best...get good grades...make new friends...don’t get in trouble...it’s rough but does get better...don’t slack off...do your homework...pay attention...don’t be a follower...be a
leader...participate in sports...keep your head held high...if you really want something, earn
it...just be yourself...respect your elders...don’t be nervous...don’t change who you are or what
you believe in for someone else...it goes fast so enjoy it while it lasts...always be prepared for
gym...have confidence...never say “Viking” in front of Mr. Ling… “yolo” doesn’t make you cool,
don’t get caught up in drama, be a GIANTS fan, manage your time, don’t stop in the middle of
the hall, don’t be late to class since you have three minutes to get there, work to your full
potential, don’t procrastinate, never chew gum in Mrs. Kwiatkowski’s class, never mess up a

respect for you that way, don’t lose focus of your future, have PRIDE, RESPECT, INTEGRITY,
DETERMINATION, AND EXCELLENCE!

CASTLE ALL STARS
Memorial Day
By Arianna C
By James B
Starting June 17, there will be a
new All Star Cheerleading team in New
Jersey coached by Erin and Katie Castle.
These two women have always wanted to
coach an All Stars team and now they will
get the chance to. Erin and Katie are
asking anyone from 12 to 18 who would
like to try out to contact Erin and Katie’s
Castle at Erin Castle on Facebook.
To be on senior team you have to
be able to do standing or running handsprings. Erin and Katie are expert
coaches, but they still know how to have
fun. They used to coach for the Middletown Eagles. When I first started, I had
no clue what a handspring even was and
now I know how to do both handsprings
because they taught me step by step.
Coaches Erin and Katie can teach you if
you would like to learn. Come join our
amazing team…
Memorial Day is celebrated the last
Monday of May each year to honor the
American men and women in the Armed
Forces who have given their lives for our
freedom.
Memorial Day was first called
Decoration Day because during the Civil
War groups of women would decorate the
graves of fallen Confederate soldiers.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed
on May 5, 1868, by General John A.
Logan.

If you haven’t heard of the new British
Boy band, you’ve been living under a rock!
Five boys ages 18 to 20 named Harry Styles,

on England’s X Factor. All the boys entered
the contest as solo artists, but Simon Cowell,
judge on X-Factor, decided to put them
together as a band. The boys, who were
strangers before they met on the show, are
now best friends and currently making
albums. They just released their new album,
Up All Night. The boys are currently in
Number One on ITunes. In the summer of
2013, they will finally be on tour. They will
soon be releasing a new album titled The

Whale Rescue 2012!
By Kassandra U
Off the northern coast of California, in Bodega
Bay, crab fishermen noticed something moving in
the water near their boat. Motoring closer, they
discovered it was a gray whale tangled in a large
fishing line dragging three buoys. Three fishermen came alongside the whale and at first the
whale started to fight but eventually calmed
down, and let the rescuers untangle him. It took
about three hours to finally free the 4-ton whale.
Then, the whale circled around the boat and surfaced, then took off. Luckily, the whale was not
injured by the fishing line.
Field Hockey
By Kaitlyn D
The 2011 Field Hockey team was the
best! We all worked hard and played
our best. Mrs. Hallard was our coach.
She taught us everything we needed to
know in the smallest amount of time
before our first game. We came in 3rd
place overall. Everyone will miss each
other and will always remember all the
hard work everyone did. Mrs. Hallard
and the 7th graders wish the 8th graders good luck in Middletown High
School North and in their new Field
Hockey team. We will always remember
how before every game we would
chant, “FLY LIKE A BUTTERFLY, STING
LIKE A BEE, RUMBLE LIONS ROAR!”
We all wish we could say it together
one last time!

about him and his blue eyes, but he thinks
she is dangerous! Then their feelings for
each other “flip.” He starts to see Juli in a

If you want amazing service, great food, and reasonable prices try Outback Steakhouse! A great appetizer you have to tried is the Blooming Onion. It’s crispy on the outside and moist onion in the middle. Your mouth will tingle with the hundreds of flavors
pilling in with your first bite! I would suggest as your main course you try the Victorian
Steak. When you smell the savory spices you won’t be able to wait to dig in. This steak
is the best I’ve ever tasted and I highly recommend you try it. The service is quick and
the servers are extremely friendly. I assure you, once you try Outback, you’ll find yourself returning again and again!

One blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence
more than doubles a person's chances of developing
melanoma later in life. A person's risk for melanoma
also doubles if he or she has had five or more
sunburns at any age. About 42% people get sunburn
a year. Many people like to believe a slight burn is
safe. However, in the long-term, the effects of any
kind of burn are the same. Make sure in the summer
you wear some sun block. You’ll get a tan, but not
get sunburn!
Here are some tips:
· Stay in the shade between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M.
· Do not burn.
· Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
· Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every
day.
· Cover up with clothing, a hat and UV-blocking sun
glasses.
· Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
· See your physician every year for a professional
skin exam.

The Pet Chinchilla
By Kassandra U
Chinchillas can give you companionship, affection, and comfort; but to make that happen, you
will have to give them a lot of attention and exercise. You’ll have to take them out of their cages into a
safe room without anything harmful things that they could chew on, and they always have to be supervised, since they are very curious and will probably jump over any fence that’s less than about five feet.
When handling them, be careful not to squeeze them, try to cup them up in both of your hands and hold
them against your body to give them a more secure feeling. Chinchillas will not automatically be bonded
with their new owner on the first day, so be patient with them, they will slowly become more comfortable around you and create a bond with you. These exotic pets can also be high maintenance. Their cage
must have enough space for them to jump around, it has to be cleaned at least once every two weeks,
and they also have to be bathed with dust every two to three days a week. The reason they need to be
dusted is because of their extremely soft fur, actually the softest fur in the world, has to be completely
cleaned. Their fur cannot get wet or else it could become matted or even get them sick so be careful with
that.
If you are considering having a chinchilla as a pet, you’ll have to be committed to it for at least
10-20 years which is their average life span. Chinchillas come in a large variety of colors. The standard
color is grey, but there are many other mutated hybrid colors like beige, white, and others. They have to
live in a temperature of around 60-75 degrees, which is the normal temperature I kept my two chinchillas in. However, I’ve seen that they like it better in 60 degree temperatures, since they have a thick coat
on them. In their cage, it is highly recommended that there is a cold piece of granite or tile that you can
purchase at a local pet store so if they feel too hot, they will lay on the cold granite to get cool. Overall,
chinchillas can be fantastic, exciting, and comforting pets as long as you do your research on them.
Take my advice, you won’t regret having this new companion!

Summertime Fashions
By Jamie S
This summer is full of fashions from head to toe!
Sunglasses are an adorable way to complete your outfit. Try Aviators or some Ray Bans!
Tops- you can always look great in a bandu under a sheer top to keep cool and look great. You can also try a
floral, coral, teal, or turquoise anything that is bright! If you want to look tanner, try a neon color. Tie top or
self tie tops are my favorites!
Dresses and rompers- high-low dresses and florals are so cute! They look great for parties or just for going
to the beach!
Bottoms- jeans shorts, tribal-pattern shorts, high-waisted shorts in a fun color, floral shorts, and white jeans
are awesome for summer.
Shoes are the best way to complete an outfit. I love wedges and sandals (preferably strappy sandals). This
summer wear snake skin, cheetah print, feathered, or anything bright with zippers or buckles! So get rid of
those flip-flops a buy sandals!
Spring Into Good Health
By Julia P
Having good health and exercise is important to everyday life. Winter is out and spring is in. There are
so many different activities to do outside in order to have fun and be healthy. So come on, let’s get
active!
1.) Take a run around the block a few times. Listen to music to make your run more enjoyable.
2.) Play a favorite sport. It’s fun and healthy. Plus it’s a great way to get some practice for your next
game.
3.) Play with your dog is a great way not just to give you some exercise to give your furry friend some
also!
4.) A bike ride! Gather your buds and all ride your bikes wherever you want with a parent’s permission
of course! It’s fun and healthy all wrapped in one!
5.) WATERFIGHT! A water fight is classic fun in the sun. On a warm day get your friends and organize
a water fight in your backyard (with a parent’s okay) Now that I have told you of these wonderful
activities, get out and do them!

The Middletown Swim Club is Still Open!
By Steven A.
As you may or may not know, the Middletown Swim and Tennis Club was in danger of closing
down! But thanks to George Haviland and the staff of Howell Ice World, the MSTC will continue to
make the summer for kids fantastic! The new hockey rink, in place of the tennis courts, will house
the New Jersey Junior Titans Hockey Team in the summer of 2012. The members of Middletown
and people who raised their kids at the pool club really stuck together and formed their own community, S.O.S, (Save our Swim Club), in hopes of stopping the township from taking away their pool
club! When the club seemed to be closed, the fantastic people of Howell Ice World “saved our swim
club!” In the “Swim Club” there are four different pools. They have the huge pool with fantastic
diving boards and lap lanes for swimming laps, this pool is known as “A Pool.” Also, there is a
smaller pool meant for kids of about seven years old where almost everyday kids play “sharks and
minnows,” a game that you must swim to each side of a pool without the “shark” tagging you. This
is known as “B Pool.”
One thing is that the new owner is going to do is take down the tennis courts. He will replace
the area with a brand new ice rink for skating and hockey. The New Jersey Titans Hockey Team is
going to practice at this rink. The owner will still keep the “Wall Ball” wall because he once played
the game there and he thought it was fun. The volleyball court is there so you can play volleyball
too. So come join us for a summer of fun!
