CSRSNL Aug 2011 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Summer greetings from the Cervical Spine Research Society and staff! Our organization remains vibrant and strong in many aspects. Our Annual Meetings have had terrific attendance and the popularity of our one day Instructional Course prior to the Annual Meeting has led us to offer this every year in recent years. The finances are strong and the research endowment is growing with continued support of both corporate and individual donors. The staff in our front office has been a model of stability and excellence for other sub-specialty organizations. In my opinion, we have increasing participation and collaboration of orthopaedics and neurosurgery and international participation in the CSRS continues to grow as well. The globalization of research and education centered on cervical spine disorders deserves special emphasis. I had the honor of attending both the Asia-Pacific Cervical Spine Research Society and the European Cervical Spine Research Society Annual Meetings this spring and early summer. Though it is only in its second year of existence, the Asia-Pacific section held a terrific meeting in Busan, Korea, from April 28-30th. The tremendous enthusiasm for our discipline in Korea and Japan as well as other regional countries is evident in the numbers: there were 378 total registrants, 176 of these which were international from 16 countries! There were scientific paper sessions, poster exhibits, plenary lectures and symposia over the two and a half days. The size and energy of this meeting in just the second year of formal organization is quite remarkable! Han Chang, MD, PhD, served as the President of the Asia-Pacific CSRS for this past year and he passed the torch to incoming President, Kazuhiro Chiba, MD, for this current year. th Similarly, CSRS-ES held an outstanding Annual Meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, from June 8 – 11 , with 261 registrants from 26 different countries! Again, the program was of very high quality with scientific papers, guest lectures, symposia and poster exhibits. José Casamitjana, MD, from Barcelona presided over the meeting during his final time as President of the European Section. He then welcomed Philippe Bancel, MD, from Paris, France, as incoming President for the next two years. I would urge all of the CSRS North American members to look ahead and consider attending one of our sister organization’s Annual Meetings next year. The CSRS-AP meeting will be held in Fukuoka, Japan, April 21 – 22, 2012; and the CSRS-ES will be in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from May 28 – June 1, 2012, as part of Spine Week. Our Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, from December 7 – 10th is developing nicely! Jeffrey C. Wang, MD, is Program Chairman and Bruce V. Darden, II, MD, our Instructional Course Chair We all know they are highly creative and organized individuals! In conjunction with our top notch staff, they have organized much of the meeting in a very smooth fashion. Our Guest Lecturer is Robert Corell, MD, who is an acclaimed scientist with expertise at the highest level on climate change and the arctic environment. For more information see the section on the Henry H. Bohlman, MD, Presidential Guest Speaker further on in this newsletter. Read on for more news and we will see you in December! THANKS THANKS! Congratulations and sincere thanks to John G. Heller, MD, CSRS 37th President. Dr. Heller concluded his Presidential Year on Saturday, December 5, 2010, as the medallion was transferred to Sanford E. Emery, MD, MBA. Dr. Heller’s guidance and leadership during his presidential term and his invaluable past service to the society has contributed to its growth and reputation and is greatly appreciated. We count on your continued involvement. CSRS acknowledges all of our wonderful volunteers who tirelessly review research grant applications, program abstracts, finances, membership applications and organize and recruit faculty for the Instructional Course. For 2010, the leaders of these Committees included Darrel S. Brodke, MD; Alexander J. Ghanayem, MD; Alan S. Hilibrand, MD; and Bruce V. Darden, II, MD. In addition to these highly visible Committees, there are a number of groups who work behind the scenes on initiatives that are vital components of CSRS and clearly instrumental to our success. Edward C. Benzel, MD, Chairs the Editorial Committee working toward the publication of the 5th Edition of the Cervical Spine textbook. Thanks to Dr. Benzel and his hard working team, the publication date for this is late fall, 2011. Stay tuned for more information on this. CSRSNL Aug 2011 Sincere thanks to Bradford L. Currier, MD, and his Ethics Committee members whose extensive discussions on policy statements resulted in the drafting of our current Code of Ethics and Conflict of Interest documents. Given the need for transparency in leadership decision making and confidence in our educational programming, they have spent numerous hours defining and drafting our current Disclosure Policy. Congratulations to Brad and all on the success of this very effective Committee effort. James D. Kang, MD, now succeeds him as Ethics Committee Chair. Brad remains on the Board as Chair of the Archives Committee replacing Christopher G Ullrich, MD. Chris served the CSRS in many leadership roles over the years. We thank him for his thoughtful guidance and global inclusivity as he rotates off the Board. As Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, Jeffrey D. Coe, MD, oversaw the selection of our highly successful meeting locations. We greatly appreciate his efforts. Jeff now chairs the Special Projects Committee and Glenn R. Rechtine, II, MD, has accepted the planning position. We also recognize the efforts of Jeffrey S. Fischgrund, MD, as Chair of the Special Projects Committee. The Committee was charged to perform clinically based research utilizing data from our members and/or industrial partners. Jeff and his team researched whether smoking affects the clinical success of cervical fusion. Their research culminated in a presentation at the 2008 Annual Meeting. Jeff has now taken over the helm of the Exhibits Committee from Jack E. Zigler, MD, who successfully oversaw the growth of our Annual Meeting Technical Exhibits. During his term, Jack drafted a set of guidelines that govern industry activities at our meetings. We thank him and his Committee members for all their efforts. We also acknowledge Lee H. Riley, III, MD, and John S. Kirkpatrick, MD, who continue to serve as our representative to the AAOS Board of Specialty Societies. After capably serving the organization as Membership Chair for the last three years, Bruce V. Darden, II, MD, has turned the leadership reins over to Rick C. Sasso, MD. Rick and his Committee, consisting of Jens R. Chapman, MD; Robert A. Hart, MD; and Seth Zeidman, MD; will begin reviewing completed membership applications in the fall. We appreciated Bruce and his team for all of their efforts on behalf of new CSRS members. As noted elsewhere, Bruce now Chairs the Instructional Course Planning Committee. Numerous CSRS volunteers populate the Committees referenced above. All of your collective leadership, energy and dedication make CSRS the strong and vibrant organization that it is today. A number of thrill seekers headed to the Richard Petty driving school on Friday afternoon for an opportunity to experience the electrifying atmosphere of professional NASCAR racing. A “ride along” as a passenger and a “rookie experience” as a driver allowed participants to sync their experience with CSRSNL Aug 2011 their racing dreams. After suiting up and signing waivers, adventurers headed to the track for an ear-splitting, heart-pounding ride at speeds approaching 160 mph. Happily, everyone returned safely and enjoyed more racing activities later in the evening at the newly opened NASCAR Hall of Fame. This state-of-the-art entertainment complex, featuring interactive exhibits and displays recounting NASCAR’s impressive 60+ years of racing history was the site of our Friday evening social event. Attendees enjoyed buffet service and refreshments under the colorful racing flags in the Great Hall. This facility was truly one of a kind.
