Dear Whanau
As you know Learning Conferences are coming up
in week 9 of this term and are an opportunity for
those parents who wish to meet again with both
their daughter and tutor teacher.
Learning Conferences give the girls a chance to
present their successes, struggles and next steps
with you. You can of course get this information
and keep up to date by reading their online
learning reflection document – just ask your
daughter to share this with you!
The diagram below and overview on the right,
is used with students to support them to be
the ‘drivers’ of their learning. It will also help you
as parents understand the process behind the
learning reflection documents.

Personal Learning Goals Overview
Personal learning goals aim to improve YOUR capacity
to learn.
They enable YOU to become more active in the learning
process, empowering YOU to become an independent
and motivated learner to achieve YOUR full potential.
YOU will need to think about:
How effective are the strategies YOU use to achieve YOUR
learning goals.
Keeping track of the progress YOU are making toward
achieving it.
Making a Booking...
Learning Conferences will be held on Monday 19
September & Tuesday 20 September.
In order to book a time for a Learning Conference, please
go to the website www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and
enter the Nelson College for Girls Prep School code which
is: gxwde
Follow the instructions on the website.
Online bookings open on Monday 5 September and will
close at noon on Monday 12 September.
If your daughter is in 7FT and you wish to see Tania
Parekura, who takes 7FT for Maths, then please select a
time with Lucy Feltham and then a time DIRECTLY after
with Tania Parekura 7FT Maths. e.g. 3:20pm with Lucy and
then 3:30pm with Tania Parekura 7FT Maths. This will save
you having to wait around to see them both.
Looking forward to a great ski day tomorrow. Thank you in
advance to all the parents for transporting and assisting us
on the day.
Kind regards
LUCY FELTHAM

Winter Tournament 2016
BADMINTON
HOCKEY
On Thursday the 18th and Friday the 19th of
August, Olivia, Lizzie and Bella made their way
to Saxton Stadium to participate in two days
of badminton at the Winter Tournament. There
were four other teams including Waimea A and
B, Broadgreen and St Marys. The teams had three
boys and three girls in each, so Girls Prep joined up
with Boys Prep.
The two Prep teams went out hard at the hockey turf in
Saxton for Winter Tournament. A and Development felt the
vibe as they attacked and defended. Throughout the two
days both teams played their best. Both teams had amazing
coaches, Evie Strawbridge and Sharona Gordon.
Day One was singles and each person played four
games. The girls in our team did very well that day
as overall we had 9 wins, 2 losses and one draw.
The games were each 13 minutes long and after
that time, it was the highest score that won. When
we weren’t playing we were umpiring games
with kids from other schools or supporting our
teammates. By the end of the day we were coming
third, not far behind St Mary’s but way behind
Waimea A.
Day Two was doubles and everyone once again
had four games. The top two girls and boys played
together and the third girl and boy played mixed.
Olivia and Lizzie won all of their games including a
very close win against Waimea A, which they won
30-29. On this day each game was two minutes
longer making them 15 minutes. Once again it was
the highest score that won.
At the end of the two days the combined Prep
Team placed third equal with Broadgreen. Waimea
A won by a long way, being at least 30 points
ahead of their nearest rival. Overall it was a fun and
competitive two days of badminton.
Congratulations to Lizzie who won a fair play
award.
With a few minutes on the clock, in Developments last game,
Paxton Heywood scored the winning shot giving them 7th
place. On the other side of the turf, A team were battling hard
for 5th spot but unfortunately Broadgreen came out on top,
scoring a goal in the last second. With only a couple of injuries
both teams came back with their heads held high after a great
two days off school!
Great work from both teams and a big thank you for Sharona
Gordon and Evie Strawbridge, also a thanks to Mr. Dunn for
sorting out the teams and getting everything ready! Hopefully
next year we will have an even more exiting two days on the
hockey turf!

NETBALL
Recently the 8A and 7A netball teams went out to Saxton
netball courts to compete against many other intermediate
schools inside and outside of Nelson. It was great bonding
with our team mates, seeing our old friends and meeting new
people. Whether we won or lost, we all had heaps of fun.
On Thursday we all played 5 games so we could be put into
grades. The 8A team got into grade B and the 7A team were in
grade F. The 7A team ended up winning their grade and the
8A team came 8th in their grade.
By Olivia Smith and Bella Richards
It was a long 2 days for these talented netballers. We also just
wanted to say a big congratulations to all of the girls who
represented our school using all of the pride values while
playing. Good effort to everyone who took part in the Winter
Tournament.

Winter Tournament 2016
TABLE TENNIS
On the 18th and 19th of August, a large amount of girls from Prep attended the 2016 Winter Tournament,
four of these girls were competing in Table Tennis - Catherine Courtney, Rosie Armstrong, Lauren Plum and
Jasmine Cuff.
Day One - Singles kicked off with a bang, with Prep winning their first and second rounds. Anticipation
hung in the air, with each school hoping their team members would do well in their games. At the end of
day one, everyone was begging for the results. Waimea Intermediate A and Prep were tied for first place
and Girls prep won 65% of their games.
The day concluded at 1:30pm, with everyone going home super excited about what the next day would
bring.
Day Two - Doubles. Everyone arrived excitedly, now knowing how the day would run and what it would
be like. Doubles kicked off with Rosie and Catherine winning their first few rounds, followed by Lauren and
Jasmine, winning theirs as well. We were improving as the day went on, gaining new skills and enjoying
the time off school.
Finally 12::30pm made it’s arrival. Everyone gathered round the table waiting for results. Prep had come
second! Waimea A had taken first place by eight points and St Joseph’s following close behind in third. The
Prep girls and boys were very happy with the results and proud with the efforts we put in. We all left with a
huge grin, knowing we’d done the best we could and represented our school, well. Thank-you Mr Dunn for
helping us to prepare for the tournament and organising our teams.

MID WINTER MUSIC CONCERT
The mid winter music concert, held in the NCG hall on August 9th, was a night to showcase the
school’s musical talents in various groups. Some of the groups seen on the night were; the Prep Choir,
Jazz band, Concert band, Stella Nova, Bel Canto, Flute Group, Orchestra, and Coastal and Tetra - NCG’s
competing rock bands.
The show was held for 2 hours with an interval in between for snacks and drinks. $10 a ticket
contributed to the funds for Stella Nova to travel to the Big Sing National Competition in Dunedin. Our
Prep choir performed two songs, Glorious and As Long as I Have Music, both of which were conducted
by Megan Younger and Zoe Bennet. A few prep students could be seen performing in the Concert
band (an open band for all wind instruments) and the Jazz band (a competing band for experienced
jazz players).

BAND QUEST
On Saturday the 20th, the Prep Band ‘Global’ performed two songs at Band Quest. Competing
against five other bands including NIS, Broadgreen, Riwaka and the two Nelson College Prep
bands in the Theater Royal. Along with the first, second and third prizes, there was also prizes for
the best guitarist, Best drummer etc. and Lizzie was fortunate enough to win the, ‘killer guitarist’
prize.
This was our first public performance this year and was a very exciting experience. Although
we didn’t place we were all very proud of our achievement and cant wait to perform in Merit
Assembly at the end of this term.
We played two songs, Love me again by John Newman, and Wake Me Up by Avicii.
