President’s Message
Dear Guild Members and Friends,
I hope that your year is going well. College and school
semesters are already nearing a close. I found it
interesting that educational institutions we birthed
from guilds around 1200 in Europe.
What does Wikipedia say about a ‘guild’? A guild is an
association of artisans or merchants who control the
practice of their craft in a particular town. The earliest
types of guild were formed as confraternities of
workers. They were organized in a manner something
between a professional association, trade union,
a cartel, and a secret society. They often depended on
grants of letters patent by a monarch or other authority
to enforce the flow of trade to their self-employed
members, and to retain ownership of tools and the
supply of materials. A lasting legacy of traditional guilds
are the guildhalls constructed and used as meeting
places.
An important result of the guild framework was the
emergence of universities at Bologna, Paris,
and Oxford around the year 1200; they originated as
guilds of students as at Bologna, or of masters as at
Paris. As I have said before, I value the educational
aspects of our Guild.
I truly believe that your mentorship and our classes are
why I have a small repair business today and why my
love of horology grows each year. Thank you to all of
our instructors and those who share their knowledge
and passion.
Please attend our May meeting. I look forward to
seeing you there!
Rob Putney, CAWCG President

The April Program by David Arnold was about
making a new dial for clocks with a computer driven
stenciling machine. David showed stencils he had
made and the results of his work. This was a very
interesting program showing new ways to do
repairs.
David showed how to screen print a dial on glass
but the technique would work for metal pan dials
too.
Don Bugh is
inspecting the
work on the
dial with David

April 12th Auction
We want to thank everyone who can and participated in the auction to make it a success.
Our deepest appreciation to those who worked the registration and the auctioneers.
A big thank you goes out to the members who brought items for the auction. Without items
to be sold there would not be an auction. We also want to thank the members who brought
items and donated the entire proceeds to the club. This helps the club to be on solid
financial standing and able to continue the work we do.
