Internal walls And Partitions

Internal walls and partitions
New-build and conversion
For new-build and for new walls in material change of use (conversion), Building Regulations Approved
Document E states that the following internal walls and partitions must meet the Rw 40 dB
requirement:
● An internal wall between bedrooms
● An internal wall between a bathroom / WC and a habitable room
● An internal wall between bedrooms and any other room
Where internal walls include a door, they are exempt from this requirement.

30 minutes fire resistance
The fire resistance and sound insulation performances are for imperforate (e.g. sealed and airtight) partitions, walls and ceilings incorporating
boards with all joints taped and filled, or skimmed according to British Gypsum’s recommendations. The quoted performances are achieved only
if British Gypsum components are used throughout, and the Company’s fixing recommendations are strictly observed. Any variation in the
specifications should be checked with British Gypsum.

DriLyner BASIC
Wall construction: 100mm medium density concrete blocks (minimum 120kg / m2)
Plasterboard
fixing method:
DriLyner BASIC using Gyproc Dri-Wall Adhesive
Wall lining:
15mm Gyproc SoundBloc (each side)
Rw 40 dB
30 minutes fire resistance (dependent on base wall performance)
For partitions that do not fall into the above criteria, for example a wall that includes a door, there is
no requirement to improve the acoustic insulation, therefore 12.5mm Gyproc WallBoard can be used
to line either side of the partition.
To upgrade the acoustic insulation of existing masonry partitions, Gyproc Soundcoat Plus can be used
to seal air paths before using DriLyner BASIC to ‘dot and dab’ Gyproc SoundBloc to the walls.

Internal floors
New-build and conversion
For new-build and new floors in material change of use (conversion), Building Regulations Approved
Document E state that internal floors are required to meet Rw 40 dB.
Fixing plasterboard directly into timber joists can result in nail or screw popping. Using Gypframe RB2
SureFix Bars in the construction of the ceiling can eliminate this problem, and help maintain the
performance and the aesthetics of the ceiling.
Example systems
Solid timber joist (600mm centres)
Flooring:
22mm tongue and groove chipboard flooring
Joists:

Intregral garage conversion
When building an integral garage, the floor acts as a bridge between a heated and unheated space.
Building Regulations require the floor and ceiling to meet 30 minutes fire resistance whilst also
providing thermal insulation. The following system provides example guidance.
Floor for integral garage
Flooring:
22mm tongue and groove chipboard flooring
Joists:
195mm x 38mm solid joists at 600mm centres
Insulation:

Conversion
For material change of use / conversion of separating walls, Building Regulations state that they are
required to meet the 43 dB DnTw + Ctr requirement.
Often upgrading existing separating walls can only be achieved from one side of the wall, therefore to
reduce as much air leakage as possible, apply a 6-8mm coat of Gyproc Soundcoat Plus to the masonry
wall prior to installation of a drylining system to increase its acoustic potential.
Example systems
Masonry wall with DriLyner SI
Wall construction: Masonry wall such as brickwork (minimum 200kg / m2)
Plasterboard
fixing method:
DriLyner SI using Gyproc Dri-Wall Adhesive with Gyproc Nailable Plugs
Wall lining:
52mm Gyproc TriLine
Additional info:
Wall must be plastered on the other side
43 dB DnTw + Ctr
60 minutes fire resistance (dependent on base wall performance)
This system is more suited to reducing mid-frequency sounds, such as speech.
Masonry wall with GypLyner UNIVERSAL
Wall construction: Masonry wall (such as brickwork)
Cavity:
Minimum 35mm cavity (created by GypLyner UNIVERSAL system) with 25mm Isover APR 1200 insulation
Wall lining:
2 x 12.5mm Gyproc SoundBloc
Additional info:
Wall must be plastered on the other side
43 dB DnTw + Ctr

This system will provide better acoustic insulation against hard to tackle low-frequency sounds, such as home cinema
systems.

External walls
New-build
Building Regulations Approved Document L1A stipulates that compliance is based on the carbon
performance of the whole dwelling and a whole building measure is given through the use of a SAP
calculation.
There are many factors that influence the SAP calculation and the U-value of the external envelope
(external walls) is only one part of this. Therefore the following example systems detail different
U-values that can be achieved by using alternate Gyproc ThermaLine laminates; this should help give
the flexibility required when designing a new property.
In Scotland, Building Regulations Section 6 stipulates minimum performances and these can vary
depending on the type of heating system.

Building Regulations Approved Document L1B includes extensions, creating new dwellings through a
change of use, or alterations to existing dwellings. The thermal element, i.e. the wall, roof or floor that
separates a heated space from an unheated space, must achieve set U-values and these vary
depending on whether the thermal element is in an extension or renovation of an existing element.
The following table highlights the U-value required, and these values can then be selected from the
following example systems.

Window reveals
Window reveals can often be a weak point in the thermal insulation as space is
restricted for fitting Gyproc ThermaLine laminates.
27mm Gyproc ThermaLine PLUS is a thin laminate that can be used around window
reveals and where space is tight. Ensuring all surfaces of external walls are
covered with some insulation will improve the overall insulation of the space.

Basements and cellars
Rooms beneath the ground can be difficult to treat as moisture can travel through the ground.
Basements and cellars can have a tanking treatment to reduce this occurrence, however this can
cause condensation to form on the inside of the room.
The GypLyner IWL (Independent Wall Lining) system builds away from existing walls, fixing to floors,
ceilings and adjacent walls to support the framework to reduce the contact with any tanking. Gyproc
ThermaLine PLUS has a high level of thermal insulation as well as a vapour control barrier to reduce
condensation forming behind the lining.
Seek advice
Some tanking methods will be downgraded if there is any penetration in the tanking seal.
BS5250:2002 contains some limited guidance. However, we would advise you to seek the guidance of
a specialist in the field of Hygrothermal performance and properties for structures below ground to
determine whether there is any risk of interstitial condensation within the construction.

In Scotland, Building Regulations Section 6 stipulates minimum performances which can vary depending on the
type of heating system, typically 0.27 W/m2K for walls, 0.20 W/m2K for pitched roofs with insulation between the
rafters (room-in-the-roof) and 0.16 W/m2K for pitched roofs with insulation between ceiling joists (loft spaces).

The fire resistance and sound insulation performances are for imperforate (e.g. sealed and airtight) partitions, walls and ceilings
incorporating boards with all joints taped and filled, or skimmed according to British Gypsum’s recommendations. The quoted
performances are achieved only if British Gypsum components are used throughout, and the Company’s fixing recommendations are
strictly observed. Any variation in the specifications should be checked with British Gypsum.

If the current element is worse than the U-value quoted in brackets, then they should be upgraded to the adjacent U-value.
Cavity walls can be upgraded to just 0.55.

Details on suitable external wall linings can be found earlier in this guide.
Care should be taken to ensure any work is carried out in accordance with local planning rules,
specifically where there are changes to the ridge or shape of the roof and the type of area the dwelling
is located.
