SHEPHERD’S CORNER
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Greetings!
In the Gospel of Luke 14:26, Jesus tells us that, “If
anyone comes to me without turning his back on his
father and mother, his wife and his children, his
brothers & sisters, indeed his very self, he cannot be
my follower!”
When we hear a gospel passage like this, we often
find ourselves wondering whether Jesus really meant
that we should turn our backs on our families or was
he exaggerating?
Our Lord was not exaggerating but rather engaging in
poetic expression to emphasize the kind of dedication
He expected from His followers. There were sayings
of Jesus collect by St. Luke about the theme of
dedication. “God must come first no matter what,
God is above anyone else.”
We are asked by the Lord to love God more than
others, even more than our parents, family, brothers
and sisters. This is a very serious matter. If we meet
a conflict between our loved ones and Christ what
should be our priority, our family or God?
God is not in competition with our family, parents,
brothers and sisters for our love. Jesus states very
clearly that God should come first in our lives; nobody
and nothing should become His rival. Giving God the
first place, on the other hand assures us that we
practice true love to all people and give each person
his rightful place.
Our love to others can never be an excuse to
surrender our love for God.
To be a real
follower/disciple of Christ demands an undivided
heart, an attention that seeks no less than a total
configuration with Him. Following Christ is not a
onetime decision but it is a process and along the
process are struggles, dying to oneself and carrying of
the cross.
Once again, Jesus reminds us. “If anyone will come
after me let him deny himself and take up his cross
and follow me.”
Are we ready to follow him?
God bless us all.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Jojo
.
Community Life
Welcome to St. Michael’s! If you are visiting with us this
weekend, or have been away from the Church for a while, we
invite you to become an active part of our parish community.
Registration forms may be found in the bulletin racks. Please fill
one out and return it to the Parish Office or drop it in the
collection basket. We encourage all to share fully in the life of
the parish by being actively involved in our ministries and being
faithful stewards of time, talent and treasure. Please prayerfully
consider how God is calling you to proclaim the Good News in
our parish community. If you have a change of address or
phone number or are moving out of the parish, please notify
the Parish Office as soon as possible. Also, when adult children
turn 18, they should register under their own names as soon as
possible. If you are not Roman Catholic, please know that you
are most welcome. While we are unable to extend an invitation
to our non-Catholic brothers and sisters to receive Holy
Communion, please feel free to come forward at Communion
time and ask for a blessing.
Bienvenidos a San Miguel!
