Phlegm Jar
What Is COPD?
COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary (PULLmun-ary) disease, it is a progressive disease that
makes it hard to breathe. "Progressive" meaning the
disease gets worse over time.
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Most
people who have COPD smoke or used to smoke.
COPD can cause coughing that produces large amounts of
mucus or phlegm. Who knows what phlegm is?(get answer
from audience)
Phlegm is a slimy substance. We’ve all probably coughed
up phlegm when we were sick.
COPD also causes wheezing, shortness of breath, chest
tightness, and other symptoms.
To understand COPD,
lungs work. The air
windpipe into tubes
(BRONG-ke-al) tubes
it helps to understand how the
that you breathe goes down your
in your lungs called bronchial
or airways.
Within the lungs, your bronchial tubes branch into
thousands of smaller, thinner tubes called bronchioles
(BRONG-ke-ols). These tubes end in bunches of tiny
round air sacs called alveoli (al-VEE-uhl-eye).

Small blood vessels called capillaries (KAP-ih-lareees) run through the walls of the air sacs. When air
reaches the air sacs, oxygen passes through the air sac
walls into the blood in the capillaries. At the same
time, carbon dioxide (a waste gas) moves from the
capillaries into the air sacs. This process is called
gas exchange.
The airways and air sacs are elastic (stretchy). When
you breathe in, each air sac fills up with air like a
small balloon. When you breathe out, the air sacs
deflate and the air goes out.
In COPD, less air flows in and out of the airways
because of one or more of the following:
 The airways and air sacs lose their elastic quality.
 The walls between many of the air sacs are
destroyed.
 The walls of the airways become thick and inflamed.
 The airways make more mucus than usual, which can
clog them.

Stir all ingredients together. Adjust the amount of
ingredients as needed to achieve desired effect. Pour into
quart jar and seal jar tightly.
Now that you understand what CODP is, we are about to
show you is how much phlegm a person with CODP coughs
up per day.
(Hold up Jar of phlegm)
This is roughly 2 cups of phlegm it represents the
amount of phlegm a person with COPD would have to clear
from their lungs every day, just to keep breathing.
(Allow everyone to pass it around, while passing around
state the information below)

In our lungs we have little hair like cells called
CILIA, and in healthy lungs, the cilia’s job is to
clear mucus and phlegm, together with pollution and
irritants out of the lungs. . In advanced COPD or
emphysema, the lungs are damaged not allowing your
cilia’s to work properly. Making the lungs not strong
enough to cough effectively allowing some smoke to stay
in your lungs. This allows the phlegm to accumulate
faster (basically the cilia get coated with the gooey
tar and can’t function) and must be cleared to avoid
drowning. Unfortunately, long term exposure to smoke
completely destroys the cilia's ability to function.
(Admit that it’s not real phlegm)
No, this isn’t real phlegm. Real phlegm would be
slightly green from infection and probably tinted with
streaks of bloody mucous and really smelly.
