The founders of Leadership Tomorrow shared two things in common. First, they
understood that the future of this region was closely tied to the commitment
and expertise of the next generation of leaders. Second, they wanted to ensure
that future leaders were knowledgeable about the region’s complex social
and economic issues and be prepared to respond as leaders. Thirty years later,
Leadership Tomorrow is continuing its commitment to effective leadership
development, knowledge of community and civic engagement.

Leadership Tomorrow’s future is secure, thanks in no small part to an effort
started five years ago to establish a $500,000 restricted scholarship fund. In
2008, LT raised $470,000 for the Founders’ Scholasrship Fund. The funds have
been well managed and LT has been able to provide close to $30,000 annually
in scholarships without dipping into the fund’s principal balance.
This year, Leadership Tomorrow celebrated its 30th Anniversary. That’s thirty
years of people coming together to learn about the issues facing our region
while developing their leadership abilities and becoming more engaged in the
civic life of our communities. On average, 20-25% of the people selected for
LT request scholarships. As a result, we decided to close the $30,000 gap in
the Scholarship Fund with a thirtieth anniversary celebration.
The event took shape when Alan Mulally, LT’85, President and CEO of Ford
Motor Company, agreed to serve as our keynote speaker. Thanks to his
involvement, and the involvement of many devoted companies and individuals,
we exceeded our goal by almost $50,000. Our Scholarship Fund is secure and
LT will continue its commitment to provide financial assistance to those
employed by small businesses, non-profits and the public sector.
Leadership Tomorrow’s lasting legacy is its graduates. Since its launch more
than 30 years ago, the program has graduated more than 1,800 participants.
A recent survey shows that 92% of alumni reported they are more actively
engaged in the civic life of our region as a result of their LT experience.
They are serving as elected and appointed officials, community trustees and
as business leaders, CEO’s, foundation executives and entrepreneurs. Having
graduated from LT, these leaders are prepared to face the complex issues
facing the region.
Thirty years later, Leadership Tomorrow is continuing its commitment
to effective leadership development, knowledge of community and
civic engagement.
