April 2012 Eastside Baptist Church exists to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ to impact the world locally and globally. Dear Church Family, Easter is here. It is such a beautiful time of the year both physically and spiritually. The flowers and trees are blooming. The appearance of winter is disappearing as the new growth on the trees and lawns are beginning to form. It is such a wonderful time of the year. Everything feels fresh and new. As the spring pushes back the dark of winter there seems to be a breath of newness all around. (That is if you can breathe with all the pollen in the air! HA!) Is there a family member that you have who is unchurched? Is there a neighbor or coworker that you can invite with you for that day who needs Christ? Who can you bring along with you? There is probably someone who you could pray for and invite. Bring them with you. Offer to pick them up and maybe plan to go to lunch afterward. You will be forever glad you did when that person comes to faith in Christ. They too will be glad you did! Spiritually it is also an exciting time of the year. We celebrate the death and resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ. He did die for our sin on Calvary’s cross but he did not stay in the borrowed tomb. He was there for 3 days and then as the mighty hymn reminds us, “Up from the grave he arose; with a mighty triumph o'er his foes; he arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever, with his saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!” What a powerful hymn and what an amazing truth. Be praying for our 1st Annual Eastside Neighborhood Chicken Cook-off on May 19. Pray that we will reach 30 cooks to participate that day in cooking in the Chicken Cook-off Contest. We need the cooks to make the day possible. The deadline for the cooks to register is April 20. I believe it will be a great day to reach our neighborhood for Jesus. You can go to www.myeastside.net and see the rules for the event as well as download the registration form needed to enter. We celebrate the resurrection of our Savior every Sunday at Eastside but Easter is a special celebration. We will begin our service that day at 10:30am. Who can you bring with you that Sunday? Our mission statement is, “Eastside Baptist Church exists to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ to impact the world locally and globally. That is why we do what we do. That is why we seek to have a Cook-off for the neighborhood. We want to reach our “Jerusalem” for the Kingdom of God. Thank you for all your prayers and hard work. Love being your Pastor Bro. About a month ago, there was a very tragic accident in their church. One of the deacons in the church, who is a security guard, brought a gun to the church to sell it to the youth director. The accident occurred when the deacon dropped the gun and it discharged. It struck the pastor’s daughter in the head and killed her. The youth director and the pastor’s daughter were going to be married this summer. This is probably one of the greatest tragedies that I have been involved in. How tragic for the pastor, his wife, and the church family. As I think about it, I am reminded of the brevity of life. The book of James says that life is nothing more than a vapor. It’s here, and then it’s gone. You can look at your children today, and they might be in different stages of school, and when they leave home to go to school, understand that you do not have the certainty that they will be coming home. That’s why I am encouraging every family to love your children today! Love is spelled “T-I-M-E.” So many parents spell love “T-H-I-N-G-S.” I do not know when or where I first became aware of that statement, but it certainly took its place in my mind and in my heart. Whoever said that simple statement certainly struck my mind over the years. I understand that it is to say that true love isn’t shown by the stuff that I give them, but by the time I spend with them. We arrive back home the night of April 5th. If it is the case that we are still in Kenya when you read this, then we covet your continual prayer! God has been, is, and will continue to be doing great and awesome things in the lives of not only the Kenyan students and leaders but also us Americans, both short term and long term teams. In next month’s newsletter I will be able to give you more details of our trip and let you know how your prayers and monetary support were seen and used during the 12 days that we were actually in Nakuru, Kenya. In matters pertaining to our youth, I’d like to petition you for your prayers once again. Prayer in the area of discipleship and growth is crucial for our students right now. I don’t mean numerical growth, but spiritual growth. I’d like to share with you part of my vision for our students here at Eastside. I understand that our youth leadership team, including myself, is not solely responsible for the spiritual growth of our teens. It is primarily the job of the parents, specifically the fathers. However, in light of that, as a teacher of God’s Word, I have a very big responsibility to make sure that I am teaching God’s children God’s truth. This truth is not only the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, but also how that truth can be applied to everyday matters. In essence, how can what we learn at church be used in normal circumstances to help us as normal people look like our extraordinary God? The answer: through making disciples. One thing that I feel God has been showing me lately is that I and our youth leadership team can’t do this task of discipleship alone. Scripture even points this out. Paul tells Titus to instruct the men in Titus’ church to teach the younger men and boys. He doesn’t say to pick a few select guys and have them teach everybody. He is saying “share the load!” Let the older, more mature believers be instructing the younger believers. This is a constant process. So, this is it. Your warning. Be praying for God to show you if He would have you be involved in student or children’s ministry. There is a awesome need! But not only be praying, be asking and inquiring of Nick Carrillo and myself of how you can be involved in the lives of our younger generations. Also, be prepared to be asked, because God just might be sending one of us to talk to you soon about you using your time to love and help minister to our students. Trust me, your involvement can change lives in more ways that we might ever know!
