The palate shows excellent varietal typicity with dark berry fruit flavours and juicy, soft tannins, mingled with a light touch of oak on the finish. 5 f Cono Sur Pinot Noir, Central Valley £17.95 Chile, 2010, 13.5% A voluptuous Pinot Noir with rich fruit notes of cherry, raspberry, plum and strawberry, enhanced by subtle smoked hints. In the mouth sweet fruit notes stand out, and its fine tannins (it spends three months in oak) give it a great texture and a mouth-filling structure. 6 h Flagstone Dragon Tree Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Western Cape £19.95 South Africa, 2007, 14.5% Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with other varieties such as Shiraz and Pinotage in the blend this is a complex and concentrated wine not made to a formula, but with the desire to create a great ‘Cape Red’. Shows rich, darkfruit, smoky-oak, with notes of mint and sweet and spicy undertones. 7 f Don Jacobo Rioja Crianza Tinto, Bodegas Corral £20.95 Spain, 2006, 12.5% A traditional red Rioja very much in Bodegas Corral’s style, matured for a minimum of 12 months in oak followed by at least a year in bottle before release. 90% Tempranillo with small additions of the traditional Garnacha and Mazuelo varieties. 8 f Château Lyonnat, Lussac Saint-Emilion £29.95 France, 2005, 12.5% Gérard Milhade’s principal château and one noted for producing wines of outstanding quality.The blend is 85% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc.The estate includes some parcels of old vines and the hillside vineyards are situated on limestone and clay soils. Deep garnet with a warm spiced bread and red fruit character: powerful, yet supple: with vanilla aromas on the finish. Fermented at low temperature in modern stainless steel tanks before bottling early to capture all the grapes’ character. A wine which is sure to appeal to many different palates and a wine that can be a great accompanier to Asian cuisine. 16 bRiverstone Ridge Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough £19.95 New Zealand, 2011, 13% The grape must was fermented using classic cool-fermentation techniques and the wine briefly aged on its ‘lees’ to develop flavour complexity and weight on the palate. It exhibits ripe gooseberry and citrussy aromas with herbaceous notes; the lively palate shows some tropical fruit and lime flavours, and the finish is refreshing and dry. 17 dRobert Mondavi Woodbridge Chardonnay, California £19.95 USA, 2009, 13.5% In order to increase the wines complexity, a small percentage of Sémillon is included in the blend and a mixture of barrel and tank fermentation is employed. Displaying lifted citrus and tropical fruit on the nose: the palate exhibits bright, zesty citrus fruit coupled with peach and nectarine, backed by cream on the finish. 18 bVidal Estate Riesling, Marlborough £20.95 New Zealand, 2010, 13% New Zealand Rieslings are rapidly gaining in reputation and this fine example shows why! Sourced from three vineyards in the premium area of Awatere Valley, the low yields result in a wine with intense tropical fruit aromas and flavours, with a delicious just off-dry finish. 19 bSancerre Les Collinettes, Joseph Mellot France, 2009, 12.5% Fermented at low temperature and aged on its ‘lees’ up until bottling to keep it fresh: this wine is stylish and racy, with the classic blackcurrant leaf and gooseberry character and minerally finish.. There is a high percentage of Pinot grapes (both Noir and Meunier) in the blend. 22 Taittinger Brut Réserve, 12% £39.95 Light, delicate and elegant: dry, fresh and balanced with a green fruit and citrus character. Produced from first pressings, with up to 20% of reserve wine used to ensure consistency of style from year to year.The blend is 40% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier: it receives three to four years ageing prior to release, this results in subtle hints of biscuit and brioche. 23 Taittinger Prestige Brut Rosé, 12% £49.95 Made mainly using black grapes, about 13% of which is vinified red to give the wine colour, with around 33% of Chardonnay in the blend to achieve an elegance in keeping with Taittinger’s style. A beautiful, delicate salmonpink colour with flavours redolent of ripe, red-berry, summer-fruits. dessert wines 50cl Bottle 24 j Etchart Torrontés Tardió, Salta Argentina, 2010, 12.5% £18.50 50ml £3.50 The long ripening season of the Cafayate Valley enables the Torrontés grapes, used to make this rich, very grapey wine, to achieve full maturity with correspondingly high natural sugar levels. Coolfermented in stainless steel vats and then bottled young.This is a wine to be enjoyed, well chilled either as an apéritif or at the conclusion of the meal. 25 k Château du Seuil, Cérons France, 2007, 13.5% £22.50 50ml £3.75 The tiny appellation of Cérons borders the northern side of Sauternes and benefits from autumnal mists, which encourage the development of ‘Botrytis’.
