Unit Three: A Growing Nation
Now What? The United States is independent and looking to make an
international name for herself. First, it must get its footing, which will involve
some decisions, dissent, and difficulty. From the presidencies of George
Washington through Andrew Jackson, we will examine how our nation
attempts to establish a name for herself via political and economic
foundations, as well as how social classes become an ever growing dynamic in
the early landscape of America.
Key Points
 Examine and appreciate the significance of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
 Understand the role of Thomas Jefferson in increasing the geographic and
political landscape of the nation.
 Become familiar with the individuals and events leading up to and during
the War of 1812.
 Understand how the Louisiana Purchase, the Monroe Doctrine, and the
Missouri Compromise had both geographic and political significance on the
early nation.
 Appreciate the growing partisanship of government.
 Explain the basic components of Jacksonian Democracy.
 Appreciate the role and treatment of Native and African Americans into the
