Water Conservation for
Outdoors
American Fork City promotes water conservation. Following are some ways to
ensure more efficient and wise water use:
· Evaluate your residential landscape irrigation plans throughout the watering season, accounting for cooler temperatures, changing weather conditions, varying
soil types, plant materials, and reviewing necessary steps for a healthy lawn.
· Visual test: Irrigate when 30% of the lawn looks wilted. Signs of wilt include
footprints that remain in the grass being made and a dull bluish-gray appearance
to the lawn.
· Water when it’s cooler to reduce evaporation loss.
· Drip irrigation for individual trees, shrubs and even perennials in garden areas.
· Irrigate in several short watering periods called cycling instead of one long period.
· Xeriscape: For turf areas that are difficult to irrigate or receive little use, look at
plant alternatives that take less water.
· Group plants with similar water requirements together and water according to
the plant needs.
· Keeping weeds under control reduces competition for water.
· Use compost to improve soil.
· Clean sidewalks and driveways with a broom rather than from a hose.
· Don’t scalp when you mow the lawn, remove no more than one third of the
blade at a time. Keep your mower set between 2-3 inches.
We encourage our residents to learn all they can about water conservation. To

the bronze plaque that lists the names of those who lived in the
“Lake City” Fort. Research has been completed and the plaque is
designed; however, there is a remaining balance of $600. If you
could help complete this tribute to early settlers in our community, please make a donation to: American Fork City Offices, 51
East Main, American Fork, Utah 84003. Checks should be payable
to American Fork – Fort Wall Memorial.
*The Sons of Utah Pioneers are working to build a monument
acknowledging Ute Indians who milled flour in this area and
American Fork’s first flour mill builder, Arza Adams. For information on this project, contact Garth Norman (801-756-3112).
