Scabies at School : Scabies are caused by tiny insects that burrow along the skin laying eggs as they go. Above the eggs small blisters form surrounded by red patches – these are very itchy. Scabies will not go away without treatment. Anyone can get scabies. Even the cleanest people get scabies. Washing in soap and water or swimming in the sea will not prevent or cure it. Scabies spreads easily to other people in the family and their friends. Scabies spreads by close bodily contact, e.g holding hands, hugging, sleeping together, sharing clothes and bedding. Scabies does not live on furniture or carpets. How do you Know? Scabies causes a very itchy rash that is worse at bedtime or when you are warm. The rash is caused by the scabies mite laying eggs. Small blisters form, surrounded by a red patch. You may first notice the rash: between fingers; on the wrist; inside elbows; around the waist; on the bottom or private parts. If someone in the family has scabies others may have caught it without noticing a rash or itch. If you are not sure if you have scabies please talk with your health professional. Students have been demonstrating kindness by respecting their peers and ensuring other people feel safe. Mathematics Room 1 is practising using different multiplication and division strategies to solve problems. Mathletics There is only a week left to use this website for free. Thank you to those parents who gave feedback on their child‟s involvement with activities. I have shifted students according to feedback. Reading and Writing Students have started their research challenge. They have chosen their topic, asked interesting questions and are starting to search for specific information. Rhett and Brock are researching white tail spiders. The boys had great joy in telling me that these spiders are often found in drawers of clothes or shoes. Addison is researching weta, but I think I have convinced her not to bring live ones into the classroom. Inquiry Some of the questions Room 1 has about heat are; I wonder if heat moves? What things make heat? Can we create heat? How do things stay hot? What things get hot? How can we create heat? Can boxes or tin foil keep stuff warm? Class Goals for this week; o To show kindness to others. o To find answers to some of our questions. Thank you for your support. Helen Barrett Room 2 Hi everyone, Well done to our hosts, Samara and Jeila, last Friday. They did a super job with hosting our assembly. We are on assembly again this week. Our hosts are Kordae, Kyin and Nevaeh. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles that came on the beach trip with us. We really appreciate you taking the time out of your week to join us. This week in maths, two groups are finishing off learning about graphs and the other group continues to work on addition stories and number sentences. This week we start our writing clubs with Rooms 3 and 8. Today we had a milk tanker visit us for a writing experience. The boys will be working with Miss Sklenars and myself and the girls will be working with Mrs Dravitzki, Miss Cooper and Miss Holloway during writing time. Our focus will be writing a description. Tomorrow we have a refresher on Dog Safety which is a topic that some of our children learned about last year. This is an important message and we appreciate the Dog Safety team coming in to reinforce it. Have a great week, Jessica Room 3 Hi everyone, In comparison to last week we have a fairly quiet week this week, which is good as it means we will have a lot of focused learning time in class. This week we are starting our girls and boys writing clubs with Rooms 2, 3 and 8. Every day this week during writing time all the boys will be working in Room 8 with Miss Sklenars and Miss Fifield, while all the girls will be working in Room 3 with me, Miss Cooper and Miss Holloway. Today we had a Fonterra tanker come and visit us and we are using that as a basis for our writing. For inquiry this week we are looking at where different creatures at the beach hide during different tides. We are also going to create some bottle top fish as part of our art for the week. In reading focus words this week for the Boots group are „said‟, „a‟ and „to‟. This week for PE we are continuing to practise catching and throwing small balls. I have been really impressed with the students skills already and they are working hard to master these skills. Have a great week, Clarissa Room 4 Kia Ora, What a busy and wonderful week last week with Duffy Theatre and the Vodafone Warriors visiting our school. We‟re continuing with our procedure/description focus in writing. The prompt for this week is „How to survive Year 6 at Normanby School‟. Our reading continues to be based around learning new vocabulary and paraphrasing the information from the text to ensure that we understand it. In maths we will be moving onto statistics, collecting and displaying data in different ways. Our inquiry focus is moving to conducting experiments around heat and what materials best insulate and conduct heat. This is in preparation for the hands-on aspect of our inquiry later in the term. Our interschool exchange this week is against St Josephs and this will be taking place here at school starting at 1pm. I have pencil booked one carwash this term and one next term at Bunnings as fundraisers for our end of year experience. I will let you know when these are confirmed by Bunnings. If you have an idea/are able to organise a fundraising venture that would be fantastic!! Please let me know and we‟ll sort out logistics etc. A ani te wiki nui, Richard Room 5 Hello everyone. I think we could safely say that autumn/winter has finally arrived. Here‟s to warm clothes, coats and cosy evenings in front of the fire! This week is slightly less busy than last week. The students learnt a lot about problem solving and following instructions at last week‟s World of Maths experience. Tomorrow we are lucky enough to have a free Dog Safety programme delivered by the Taranaki Veterinary Centre. We are scheduled in with Room 2, from 10am -11am. A good way to follow up and cement their learning is for your child to tell you about some of the things they learnt to keep them safe around dogs. As scientists we also have to learn how to compare and contrast our observations to develop our thinking skills and understanding of the concepts we are investigating. This means we have to complete compare and contrast maps about rainbow drinks and viscosity towers first before we see if we can change the viscosity of water. In other curriculum areas we are training our brains to write descriptions, working on counting back and learning catching and throwing skills through basketball concepts. We have circle time on Mondays. Our discussion this week will be around being a successful learner. Feel free to contact me ([email protected]), or come and see me at any time. Have a great week, Liz Room 6 Hi everyone, Our circle time this week will be about caring for our classroom environment. Circle time is a great way of getting children talking about what they feel is important and what role they can take in being responsible. Over the past two weeks‟ students have made contributions about why it is important to move from one activity to the next quickly and quietly, and also about why it is important that we are respectful. It is great to see the children willing to step up and offer suggestions for how they think these things will work better in our class. There was great excitement at school last week with World of Maths, Duffy Theatre and a visit from the Warriors. This week is a little less busy, however, we do have a session with the dog safety people on Tuesday. There will be a few changes to reading groups and levels this week. Please remember that children are tested on how well they understand a text as well as how well they can read it. If you are unsure about this, ask your child to retell you the story they have just read to you. Do they include all the main characters? Do they clearly understand the main message? Are they including anything in their retell that is not specifically written but that they know by connecting to their own worlds? As always, feel free to get in touch if you have any queries or concerns [email protected] Have a great week, Tash Room 7 Hello everyone, After such an exciting week last week things are a little bit quieter this week. Tomorrow we have a presentation about dog safety delivered by the Taranaki Veterinary Centre. Please ask your child to tell you about some of the things they learnt to keep them safe around dogs. We only have this week left on our free Mathletics trial. If you would like to send me some feedback about the programme it would be most appreciated. [email protected]. Room 7 have really enjoyed the different aspects of maths covered and collecting points to earn awards. It is great to see students are logging on at home as well. The Room 7 laptops have been fully utilised from 8:30 am to 3pm each day! Many of you will know we are collecting points using „Class Dojo.‟ The students earn points individually to contribute to an overall class total. The students earn points for mat manners, using kind words, successful learning, keeping on task and teamwork. So far this term the class have earned 278 points. When we reach 1000 points we will have a class celebration. Our class goal for each week will now be discussed at circle time on Mondays. The discussion this week will be around how we can help so that everyone gets a fair go at using our class equipment. Have a great week, Mandy Room 8 Hi everyone, This week we begin the first of our „Writing Clubs‟ and today the children got the opportunity to have an up-close look at a Fonterra tanker! This is a great motivation for our writing this week and by the end of it every child will have worked on a piece of descriptive writing that will be used to inform others about what a tanker looks like, what the different parts on a tanker are for, and what a tanker driver‟s job involves. A big thank you to the team at Fonterra for allowing the tanker to visit today. In maths we are back into our learning about numbers with a focus on the „teen‟ numbers, counting accurately, reading and writing numbers, making up number stories and completing number bonds for our stories, and using addition strategies. Tomorrow we have a refresher on Dog Safety which is a topic that some of our children learned about last year. This is an important message and we appreciate the Dog Safety team coming in to reinforce it. Have a great week, Jude CAN TABS WANTED The school is collecting can tabs and screw caps off wine bottles. These can be left in the container at the office. Every tab or cap collected is worth one minute of dialysis. Kids Corner Rooms 2, 3 and 8 went to the beach to find out what lives between the tides. Here are some photos of our trip.
