Sunset November 11 2011
Dagmar Iona Scatliffe Hodge was born on February 14, 1930 on the island of Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
She is the first daughter of eleven children born to Luther Alpha and Mary Eliza Scatliffe.
As a young child, she quickly knew the meaning of responsibility and hard work. She attended the Road Town
Methodist school and frequently told the story of caring for her father's livestock and provisions hours before
walking many miles to attend school. After she completed her education, she became a schoolteacher in the
Road Town Primary School when she was a teenager. Teaching, at that time, was becoming a desired profession. Thus, she pursued her education in St. John /Antigua University, Antigua where she obtained her Bachelor
Degree in Teaching. After returning home she taught in many schools in Tortola. To many Tortola residents she
is affectionately known as "Teacher Dagmar'.
She met Stanley Hodge of Huntum's Ghut, Tortola, began a relationship that led to marriage in 1953. She
then moved to the United States that same year to live with her husband in New York City and seek better opportunities. They raised three daughters Gretchen,a Clinical Nurse Manager in New York, Therese, a Physical
Education teacher in Addelita Canrun Junior High School in St . Thomas and Melva., an Educational Coach
here in the BVI ..
As her children grew older, Dagmar developed an interest in social work. She was employed by the Department of Social Services in 1966. During that time she was a caseworker investigating the social welfare of needy
families. For the next thirty-three years she advanced within the department from supervisor of caseworkers to
Deputy Inspector until she retired in 1999.
At the same time Dagmar decided to pursue her education. She attended Queens College and gained her
Bachelor of Arts Degree. She then obtained her Masters Degree in Social Sciences from Colombia University
in New York City in 1981.
Though Dagmar spent the majority of her life in the United States, she never lost her love for her native land
of Tortola and her family. She made sure her daughters, though born and raised in New York all their lives, visited
Tortola yearly. This annual connection allowed them to know their family and the islands culture from when they
were children. She joined Beulah AME Church in Harlem New York where many BVI residents attended service.
She was a strong supporter of the British Virgin Islands and the Virgin Gorda Mutual Society organizations. She
was also an instrumental part of the New York I BVI Hospital Committee in the mid 1990's that brought the first
troop from New York to participate in the annual BVI festival.
Family has always been the center of Dagmar's life. She was proud of her family roots and heritage. Many
family members came to reside with her while they pursued their education. She became a surrogate mother to
many who came to New York City for the first time and did not have the benefit of a family in the city. Most of all
she was very proud of her brothers and sisters. She was the Big Sister, the voice of wisdom , and support.
Though illness silenced her in her final years, her legacy lives on in those lives she has touched. Her passing
leaves a void in our lives and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
As we say our goodbyes, we know that Dagmar has fought the good fight: she has finished the course and
she has kept the faith. May she rest in peace until all those who died in Christ will be raised to everlasting glory.
