Hong Kong citizens and companies are savvy users of technology. But this wasn’t always the case. HK's first computer was installed in 1963, later than most of the other Asian Countries. Hong Kong then started on a rapid pace of computerization and technology adoption. These developments are documented by Anthony O, a computer pioneer in Hong Kong in his recent book “The Computer Age in Hong Kong". In his talk, Mr. O will highlight some of the important developments of the past 50 years and discuss the future challenges and opportunities of the Computer Industry in Hong Kong. Bio-sketch of speaker: Mr. Anthony O graduated from the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Hong Kong in 1961. He joined IBM HK the same year and is considered to be one of the pioneers of the computer industry in Hong Kong. During his 30 years of service with IBM HK, he was personally responsible for the introduction of the first scientific computer at HKU, and was also responsible for the first real-time banking system in China which was later adopted by China’s state-owned banks in the 1990’s. The same software solution also became a standard in Hong Kong, most ASEAN countries and China. His other personal contributions include introducing the IBM PC, and establishing the remarketing channels in Hong Kong, and the set-up of IBM’s first software Joint Venture in China.
