PEOPLE residing neal' the Shiva temple at Bandepalya near Electronic
City had a scare on Saturday afterlloon after a p ipeline laid by GAIL Gas
Ltd caught fire due to a leakage.
Minutes after be ing informed by
the local residents at 1.50pm, officials
from the Electronic City Fire Sel"Vice
Station rushed to the spot llear Garebhav i Palya s ignal and doused the
fire, averting a major accident. Authorities of Gas Authority of India
Ltd said the gas supply was immediately stopped in the line to bring the
fire under control.
A department official said that this
is the second such incident in the past
10 days in their limits. A similar incident took place at Mangammallapalya
a few days ago.
The officer sa id that GAILauthorit ies were cunelltly testing the gas
supply p ipelines to check for leakages. On Saturday too, they W€l-e testing
a pipel ine when a leak resulted in a
fire. A fire department official said
that the leakage in tile pipeline could
have been due to road works ill the
vicinity.
The officer said that thOUgll it is a
minor incident, they have warned the
GAIL authorities to prevent such accidents_"We will book a case if s imilar incidents occur in future, " the officersaid .
Gas supply not disrupted
A GAIL official told Express that the
'minor incident' has notdisrupted the
gas supply in tile city.
GAILGas Ltd supplies gas to households in areas including HS!R Layout,
Bellandur and Dollar 's Colony.

there was no danger o f it escalating. Gas su pply was also
not affected. BWSSB workers
had dug close to the pipes

GAIL officials said. One fire ten der was

"On e fire tender from Whitefield
station was despatched and it reached
th e spot before 2pm. The fire was
brought under conb'ol in the first 10
minutes and completely doused within
20 minutes. As a precautionary measure, our vehicle wa ited there tilJ 4pm
before return in g," fire department officials said. GAIL officia.ls said they ordered a probe into the incident. "The

have to find out whether BWSSB had

with us before undertaking the work,"
an offici al said.
However, there was no confrrmation from BWSSB officials about the accident. GAlL has laid 60kms of steel
pipelines and 440km of pipeline covered in medi um dens ity polythene material. The mega project for supplying
Piped Natura l Gas fPNG) from Dabhol
to Benga]uru is nearing completion
and aims at giving 1.32 lakh domestic
connections over fi ve years. It has already started supplying PNG to 170
households in HSR Layout
