Dear Friends of Galcom:
Building On The Work Of Giants In Zambia
By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder,
and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he
builds (1Cor. 3:10)
The great nineteenth century Scottish missionary-explorer, David Livingstone,
following his renowned encounter with Henry M. Stanley near Lake Tanganyika
on October 27, 1871 (who upon their meeting, famously said “Dr. Livingstone, I
presume?”), refused when he was implored to return to comfort and international
acclaim in England. Instead, insisting that his mission in life was not yet
complete, he pushed deeper into the vast equatorial African bush in search of
unreached tribes in uncharted territory.
One and a half years later, near Chitambo, Zambia, weakened by disease and
exertion, the passionate missionary heart of David Livingstone beat for the last
time on May 1st, 1873. After decades of strenuous service, he was finally at
rest, having almost single-handedly opened the African interior to evangelistic
possibilities. The acclaim that he did not seek in life overtook him in death as
telegraph messages came from England requesting the return of his body for a
funeral befitting a national hero and subsequent honored internment in
Westminster Abbey.
Livingstone!s devoted African friends and companions reluctantly complied after
a time, being understandably unwilling to part with the mortal remains of their
brave, gentle and respectful mentor who had done much by his example to
demonstrate the life of Christ among them. In an act of inspired compromise,
his faithful attendants Chuma and Susi removed Livingstone!s heart and then
returned the body with this note attached: "You can have his body, but his
heart belongs in Africa!"
Mindful of the sacrificial, fragrant devotion of David Livingstone and other pioneer
missionaries in Zambia, Galcom is honored to assist ministry partners there by
using technology to expand the work of evangelism, discipleship and church
planting. Earlier this year, Galcom sent 1100 Go-Ye fix-tuned solar-powered
radios and a technical team to Kasempa, Zambia to launch the first Christian
radio station in the area.
This team was led by engineer David Creel and broadcast technician David
Casement (our two dynamic Davids!), supported by 6 volunteers from Calvary
Chapel in Philadelphia and hosted by missionaries Ron and Bridget Wint in
Kasempa. Following 26 hours of bone-wearying travel, the team was able to
plan, organize and get to work on January 4th after a restful night. The 6
volunteers were assigned to unpack, assemble and erect the 100 foot broadcast
tower, while the two Davids went to work on installing the audio equipment in the
studio. Altogether, the team experienced sweet fellowship while overcoming
numerous obstacles in the process.
Dave Casement noted, “The Lord was gracious to us as during the day, there
was almost no rain and we could continue working. Within 10 days the tower was
up and the antennas mounted and connected. The studio equipment was all
installed and connected. By 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday January 13th we turned on the
transmitter and all was working well. After calibrating Lumba Radio 90.7 FM, we
scanned and listened to the entire FM band and discovered we were the only
station on the dial- not just the only Christian station! What potential this has.
The Kasempa area has a population of 100,000 and the only FM signal is Pastor
Wint!s Christian broadcasting. Praise the Lord!”
Now, with Lumba Radio broadcasting on 90.7 FM to the first 1100 Go-Ye radios,
Pastor Wint has a powerful tool to begin sending the message of Christ!s
everlasting love for Zambians in their heart language over the airwaves. Thank
you Galcom partners for your faithful prayers and financial support!
Please help send more Go-Ye radios to Zambia and other ministries
around the world giving the non-literate ears to hear the Word of God.
Funds specifically designated for MegaVoice go to Audio Bible projects.
