Volcano Project 2014

VOLCANO PROJECT
I.
II.
Conduct research to answer the following questions. Record all information in either
Word or Pages.
1. How do volcanoes normally form?
2. Where do volcanoes normally form?
3. What does a volcanoes VEI measure?
4. What are the destructive forces of a volcano?
5. Where are the majority of the world’s volcanoes?
6. List a minimum of 3 characteristics of the three major types of volcanoes.
7. Construct a table to compare/contrast the benefits vs. destruction of volcanoes.
8. Construct a graph to show the cumulative number of fatalities from volcanoes for the 20th
Century (1901 – 2000).
9. Make a ranked list of the most destructive events of volcanic eruptions. This list should
be based on the cumulative fatalities associated with the specific event.
10. Based on your research, state your opinion on whether volcanoes are more beneficial or
harmful. Cite examples to support your claim. Be prepared to debate your opinion in
class.
Below is a list of major volcanoes. For each volcano, complete the stated
requirements. Record this information in either Excel or Numbers.

Presentation
The final part of your project will be to construct a media presentation. Choose one of the
volcanoes listed above and create a presentation of your findings. This must be accomplished in
one or more of the following media formats:





PowerPoint / Keynote
Aurasma
iMovie
Tellagami
TouchCast
Your presentation must include the following information:
 A picture/video of the volcano.
 Your findings for each of the twelve (12) questions in section II.
 A statement of any current technologies being used to monitor the possibility of future
eruptions.
IV.
Grading
This project will be entered as TWO TEST GRADES. Your completed project is DUE
November 14, 2014 by 3:15 p.m. NO EXCEPTIONS. An extension of time will only be given
in the event of major illness, death, zombie apocalypse, meteor strike leading to mass extinction,
eruption of the Yellowstone Supervolcano, or the formation of a volcano on the campus of RHS.
Projects will be graded on the following criteria:
a) Completeness
b) Neatness
c) Organization
d) Accuracy
e) Quality of Presentation.
