Before you consider trying to beat an approaching streetcar, think again. The consequences are not worth the risk. Instead, yield the right of way and let the streetcar pass. At the Regional Transit authority we know that just one accident could forever change the lives of those involved. We understand the passion and adoration for the history and culture of the New Orleans streetcar and we celebrate the unique love affair that our citizens have with this famous New Orleans icon. Our goal is to operate one of the safest transit agencies in the world. To do so, we all must work together to maintain safety. We pledge to continue to train our drivers, improve visibility and update system signage and vehicle lighting. We ask that you do your part by staying alert and aware, yielding the right of way and never attempting to beat the streetcar. You’re already on your way to doing your part to Live Outside the Lines. Streetcars weigh more than 40,000 pounds of steel. Many streetcars can travel at speeds of close to 30 miles per hour. Getting in the path of a moving streetcar could lead to irreparable damage to you or your property. Look around and pay attention to your surroundings. Streetcar tracks are a federal rail line. Yet distractions are one of the leading causes of accidents on the line. When you’re on the neutral ground or near the rail line do not take unnecessary chances. Wait until you have a clear crossing. Listen to your surroundings and heed the familiar streetcar warning bells. Streetcars cannot stop on a dime. It takes up to nearly 110 feet to come to a complete stop. Yet often we “get into the zone” and lose one of our most critical senses, putting all the responsibility for safety on the operator. • Always stop at intersections and crossings • Always pay close attention to your surroundings • Listen for streetcar safety bells, horns and other warnings • Always wait for the streetcar to pass • Always Look Both Ways before crossing the tracks • Always keep music and headphones at minimum levels • Always yield the right of way to an approaching streetcar • Always tune into your surroundings and take responsibility for your own safety • Always proceed only after you have a clear, safe pathway Stop, look and listen to your surroundings. Always yield the right of way to the oncoming streetcar. Stay clear of the tracks and commit to Live Outside the Lines.
