A western town, Steamboat is as Old West as they come. The first homesteaders staked a claim in 1875, and the community has a long history of ranching, farming and mining. Downtown is undeniably picturesque, with historic storefronts and the Yampa River flowing by just steps from the buildings. A paved trail parallels the Yampa, and a steady stream of walkers, joggers, rollerbladers and bicyclists form a blur of bright color. The town's historic flair adds a lot of charm to the shopping and dining housed within the red-brick walls. Steamboat is known as the hot springs capital of Colorado. One of these hot springs lies at the heart of the Old Town Hot Springs, with three naturally heated pools (one with a slide). For a back-to-nature take on the area's springs, head eight miles north of town to Strawberry Park Hot Springs. (If you didn't bring your own, you might want to rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle for this excursion, as the access road is full of twists and turns—and rocks.) At the end of the road you'll discover three stone pools in a forested setting. You won't be escaping civilization altogether. But civilization does have its advantages—on-site massage is available. It was skiing that put Steamboat Springs on the map. With its loads of Champagne Powder—a term not only coined here, but trademarked as well—Steamboat has also earned the moniker of “Ski Town USA,” due to the number of Winter Olympians it has produced. The Steamboat Ski Area (about 10 minutes away) features 20 lifts, 142 trails, 2,939 acres, three terrain parks and 3,668 feet of vertical rise spread across a range of six peaks. Free shuttle service is available from the resort to the ski area during daytime hours. Among skiing and boarding aficionados, Steamboat has earned a reputation for varied terrain and top-notch tree skiing. For cross-country skiing, the Steamboat Ski Touring Center offers 30 kilometers of groomed trails. Don't write off Steamboat Springs as a skiers-only kind of place. Your favorite outdoor pastimes will be enhanced by a Rocky Mountain backdrop, complete with wildlife, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and wildflower-dotted meadows. Championship golfing? You bet. With jaw-dropping views and Robert Trent Jones, Jr., as its designer, the 6,906-yard Rolling Stone Ranch Golf Club is known as the best in the area. The Haymaker is another championship course gracing Steamboat, with four sets of tees and an open-fairway plan overlooking the scenic Yampa Valley. Then again, you could pull on your favorite pair of Levis and see Steamboat the Old-West way—from horseback. With a large number of outfitters in the area, you'll have no trouble finding a mount. Or try hiking or biking. All levels of hiking trails crisscross the Steamboat Range, and hundreds of miles of biking trails traverse the Yampa Valley. Rent a mountain bike at the ski area for some steep riding down Mount Werner. ____________________________________________________________________ Driving Directions From the West (including Hayden/Yampa Valley Airport) Follow I-40 E through downtown Steamboat Springs to the Mount Werner/Steamboat Ski Area exit At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Mt.
