GIS for the Younger Learner EXPLORING OUR WORLD WHAT IS GEOSPATIAL THINKING? How do we teach students to think? Connection to curricular content Accommodates different types of learners at various levels Can be adapted for various settings Prepares students for careers WHAT IS GIS? Geographic Information Systems Map layers – like transparencies Maps have data attached to them SKILLS ENHANCED WITH GIS Inquiry Critical Thinking Problem-solving Peer mentoring Field work Local to global connections The technology doesn’t have the answers—you do! Maps are imperfect, but useful You have responsibilities as a community and global citizen You can make a difference! THREE TYPES OF GIS TOOLS Online Mapping (demonstration today at 1:00pm) Virtual Globes (demonstration Thursday at 11:30am) Desktop GIS ONLINE MAPPING http://www.esri.com/software/mapping_for_ever yone/index.html www.statemaster.com http://factfinder.census.gov/home/en/kids/funfa cts/funfacts.html http://www.nationalatlas.gov VIRTUAL GLOBES ArcGIS Explorer: Free Download http://www.esri.com/software/mapping_for_ev eryone/explorer/index.html (demonstration Thursday at 11:30am) Google Earth: Free Download http://earth.google.com/ DESKTOP GIS AEJEE (free) http://edcommunity.esri.com/software/aejee/ ArcGIS http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/index.html USING AEJEE Three lessons: Magellan’s Voyage Mapping the Zoo Tracking Tornadoes More AEJEE lessons available at ArcLessons Thinking Spatially Using GIS by Napolean and Brook is available for $31 from GISetc ARCLESSONS http://edcommunity.esri.com/arclessons/arclessons.cfm MAGELLAN’S VOYAGE Students will follow the path of Ferdinand Magellan on the first half of his expedition’s circumnavigation of the globe — from Spain to the eastern coast of South America and across the Strait of Magellan to the Pacific Ocean. Students will identify continents, countries, and cities along Magellan’s route and work with major latitude and longitude lines. Students will learn about the doldrums and trade winds. Students will interact with the map to change the scale and appearance of the map and answer relevant questions about Magellan’s voyage. Live Demo MAPPING THE ZOO Students will explore the concept of classification and how using categories can help make it easier to study certain things and ideas. Students will use GIS and work with a fictitious zoo to learn different methods of classification, create thematic maps, query data, and answer questions about what they see on the map. Live Demo TRACKING TORNADOES Students will work with 10 years of tornado data for the entire United States to locate Tornado Alley. Students will use three different approaches — frequency, intensity, and density — to identify Tornado Alley, the part of the country where most tornadoes occur. Students will examine and compare seasonal differences in tornado occurrences. Live Demo THANK YOU FOR COMING!
