What time does your school start?
BEEP! BEEP!
It is 7.30 am. Chris, 13, looks at the alarm clock. He goes back to sleep.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
It’s 8.00 am. Chris wakes up and goes back to sleep. “Chris!” It’s his mum. “It’s 8.30!” Chris
gets up. “I hate mornings!” he says.
Many teenagers don’t like mornings! Scientists at Oxford University, England, have some
new information. “Teenagers aren’t lazy” says Professor Russell Foster. “They have a
different body clock.” Teenagers are two hours behind adults. So, when it is nine o’clock, a
teenager’s body thinks it is seven o’clock!
One head teacher in Newcastle, England, has an idea. He thinks pupils learn better in the
afternoon. He wants his school to start at eleven o’clock in the morning, not at nine o’clock.
So, pupils at school can have a lie-in!
