The
Potentate's
Message
Your Imperial Representatives were in San
Antonio for the 135th Imperial Council Session
July 5th through July 9th. The weather was
HOT and dry. The call had thirty-six
resolutions contained in it and each one was
covered. This meant there were some long
days and deep spirited discussions. The vote
to close Greenville, Spokane, Springfield, Erie,
Shreveport and Galveston did not pass.
Changes are going to be made in the way our
hospitals do business in order to save as much
money as we can. The delegates voted in favor
of “Third Party Pay”. this is not a “quick fix” in
as much it will take twelve to eighteen months
to put the infrastructure in place to handle this.
We will be known now as “Shriners
International” rather than “Shriners of North America”. We voted in San Antonio for the
dispensation of two new temples, one in Manila, the Phillipines and San Juan Puerto
Rico.
I would like to take this moment to say THANK YOU to Boyd’s Speedway and the
Harvey family for the check that was presented to the temple to be earmarked for the
Transportation Fund in the amount of $2,222.00. Also, THANK YOU goes to Bill &
Barbara Hassler for the $1,000 check in memory of his brother, Friday Hassler and to Rhea
Co. Shrine Club for the $525.00 in which both of these will be earmarked for a new van.
Our Temple Picnic will be on August 8th from 11:00 - 4:00 at Alhambra. Bring your kids
and grandkids out for dogs, burgers and games. Thanks Janey and all the other
committee members.
The Southeast Shrine Association will be in Jacksonville August 12th through 16th.
There’s still time to sign up and go. Hope to see you there.
The Shag Dance Club has Alhambra rented on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd. Also, the
DeKalb Shrine Golf Tournament is on the 23rd at Dogwood Hills Golf Club.
Our Sunday Luncheons have been going strong and I would like to thank all those who
give their time to come out and support this worthwhile endeavor.
The Alhambra Ladies Fashion Show and Luncheon will be on the 29th. Your Divan will
be on hand to escort, serve and bus tables for all the lovely ladies in attendance.
We must demonstrate our dedication, our concern and our commitment even when
doing so may not be in our own personal best interest or to our liking. We must show our
concern for learning the feelings and needs of our Nobility and follow through on our
commitment to do what is the best interest of our Nobility.
Continue to pray for our troops in harms way. Enjoy and live today as if it were your
last.

DIRECTORS STAFF
It seems like only yesterday I was writing about the
coming of warmer weather, and saying “bring on
summer”. Well now I’m writing this in July, for publication
in August, and I’m already “crying for some cooler days”.
Will a poor sensitive soul like your reporter ever be
satisfied? (No! according to Mrs. G.)
As all of my loyal readers may very well appreciate,
May came and your Directors Staff was very disappointed
that there was no “Hot Sands”, as we had hyped and
planned for.
However, November is only just around the corner,
and we can still hope for the future.
We continue to have several of our stalwart members
“ailing” and request that you keep them and everyone else
deserving, on your prayer lists.
We were happy to have A. D. “Pete” Lowrance back
with us at our June meeting. We were also delighted to
have Jim Harris in attendance. We last reported that Jim
has had a run in with a power pole. Upon further
investigation we learned that he had tangled with (can you
imagine at his age) barbed wire! Whoa Jim! As some wise
person of the past warned “walk softly and carry a big
stick”. Seriously, we were pleased to have Jim back,
although he wore some odd looking contraption on his leg,
he was mostly ambulatory.
I heard tell of an old Geezer who was stopped by a
State Trooper: “Did you know you were speeding, Mr.
Williams?” Sure I knew I was speeding; if I don’ hurry, I’ll
forget where I’m going.” OR “I want to die like my
Grandfather; quietly and in his sleep; Not screaming and
yelling like those other people in the car with him.”
Since we failed to get a report in for July, feel remorse
in failing to note the birthdays for that month as well as
August: July Randy Stephens 29th; August C. E. (Buster)
Cravener 13th. Here’s wishing all a most happy enjoyable
anniversary celebration.
I know my readers think that I am repetitive, however,
we always want to remind our readers to remember our
sick and disabled members and friends; let them know we
care. Keep up your good works, and try to make them
better, and more rewarding. Don’t Worry Be Happy, let the
World know that you are a Shriner, and are proud of it.
Don’t forget the Alhambran Sunday Luncheon 1st and 3rd
Sundays, Stated Meeting and Uniform Unit Meeting the
first Monday, and the Tues. and Fri. luncheon clubs. Try to
make yourself available for all activities sanctioned by
Alhambra.

LEGION
OF HONOR
Things seem to be getting better. We did not have a
Stated Meeting this month but I hope everyone was there
for our Unit meeting. I am still having trouble and could
not make it to the unit meeting.
Let’s remember our sick and on going prayer list.
Although the “Holocaust” is technically a general
term that refers to the violent deaths of a large number of
people, most know the word as referring to one event of
history, which was the systematic mass murder of
European Jews by the German Nazi Party during WWII.
Six million Jews were killed during the holocaust of WWII.
Until next time,
Ye Ole Legion of Honor reporter signing off. God Bless
Editor’s Corner
The medieval stonemasons were sometimes known as
“freemasons.” Historians have suggested several origins of
the term:
• From the French term franc Macon, a mason working in
a Lodge that has been granted a franchise by the Church to
work on Church property and free from taxation of
regulation by the King or the local Municipality.
• From the French “frere Macon” literally meaning:
“brother Mason”
• From Free Men, that is they were not serfs or indentured,
and free to travel from one work location to another.
• From working in “freestone,” a type of quarry stone, and
they were therefore Freestone Masons.
Yours in the Faith,
David A. Talbert, Editor

THE 2009 ALHAMBRA CIRCUS IS COMING TO TOWN
The Place: Camp Jordan Arena - East Ridge, TN
Date: October 8,9,10,11 2009
Show Times: Thursday - 7 p.m. • Friday - 7:30 p.m. • Saturday - 1 p.m., 4
p.m. & 7:30 p.m. • Sunday - 1 p.m. & 4:30 p.m.
TICKETS WILL BE THE SAME AS LAST YEAR: $15/TICKET
Nobles and Ladies the Alhambra Circus is underway. We need to
start talking to everyone telling them that this is a very good family
oriented show that rivals any circus that comes to town including Barnum
and Bailey and the tickets are the lowest in town. Our Circus also has the best seating. All
seats are good and you are right down where the action is. There are no seats in the arena
that are the nose bleed section similar to the Round House where the other circus is held.
Ours is the best show, being renewed very year. Elephant, lions, horses, dogs, trapeze
acts that mystify and amaze kids of all ages. Here is the good part, everyone is a member
of the Circus committee and this year with the economic conditions we need everyone’s
help to pull off a successful Circus and I know that as always I can count on everyone
pulling this off again. We have a number of fund raisers at the temple and all are of equal
importance therefore it takes all of us to make a success out of the Circus. No contribution
is too small. Here are some suggestions for you to consider in ways to help the Circus.

a Circus daddy or momma. These tickets will be coming to you soon.
2. Sell some Circus ads, Ron Dixon and Perry Perkins will be talking to you more

way in paying for our Circus.

everyone contributes.
Nobles the Circus is a big part of the lifeblood of
Alhambra and you all make it a success every year.
Thanks for all you do for Alhambra.

Shrine Ladies
Helping Hands
With the beginning of a new school year just about
here, we are happy to report that we have another one of
our Shrine Patients starting college. We will be awarding
her a scholarship and will have more information about
her and the college she will be attending as soon as we
receive all her paperwork. This is what makes our work so
rewarding - just knowing that we will have a great impact
on a young person’s future.
In addition to our Scholarship Program, we continue
to send needed items to both Lexington and Cincinnati
Shriners Hospitals. To date for this year we have sent
$3,613.00 worth of items to Lexington and $1,868.00 to
Cincinnati. We also have sent $560.00 worth of food items
to the Parent House at Cincinnati.
To continue these programs we have many
fundraising events planned or that are on going, such as
our Sunday Luncheon on the third Sunday of each month.
We need many workers as well as donations of desserts for
this. So please let us know when you can help. This is also
true for the Alhambra Sunday Luncheon on the first
Sunday of each month. We really need help!
Ladies, please mark your calendars for September
18th. This is the Clown Unit drive thru BBQ, Cruise-In, etc.
They have asked the Helping Hands to help sell tickets and
to have a food booth at the Cruise-In. We will have more
information and know more of the planning needs at our
August and September meetings. It sounds like we’re
going to have a lot of fun at this event, so let’s get involved.
If you would like information about becoming a
member of the Shrine Ladies Helping Hands, just call our
President, Lady Janey Sherrell at 332-7123.

THINK
CIRCUS
CLOWN UNIT
Dear Fellow Clowns
Greeting one and all fellow funny
men. I do hope everyone is having a
good summer so far. It is with deepest
sorrow we report the loss of Captain
Roy’s Lady, Vivian Phillips recently.
Vivian was a wonderful Lady who
enjoyed going to clown events and
helping with our BBQ too. We wish
“Fluffy’s” mother a speedy recovery
from her by-pass surgery too.
To the Boyd Speedway owners, thank you for “Shrine
Night”. Mac Griffith and your truly represented the clown
unit in our “Bright Red” uniforms and got to see a great
night of racing. Get our every Friday night and see great
stock car racing at Boyd’s Speedway.
We had 3 clowns dress-out for the 4th of July
Monteagle Parade this year, William Miller, Rick Brown
and myself. We had a super time on our motors and I know
the crowd enjoyed us too! Thanks Nobles.
Now let’s all be packing up for our SESA/SESCA
Convention in August. I’ve confirmed Kenneth, Tommy,
Eddie, L.C., Casey and myself, all going, why not you too?
We have seats available and beds too.
Now let’s get moving on the September 18th drivethru BBQ and Cruise In for our Clown unit. Nobles, this
can be a major fund-raiser for clowns and our charities this
year - so sell banners & BBQ tickets now! And plan to be
there for a full day - work time starts at 6:00 a.m. until 10:00
p.m! Bring help with you too! We all need to get
information out to area car clubs asap, see Tommy Malone
for car club info.
Lastly - CIRCUS, CIRCUS, CIRCUS, October will be
here soon and what’s a Circus without clowns? We have
TV-12 planning to film us in our attire and on our scooters
before the Circus, so stay up with us.
Clowns, please attend our meetings - 1st MondayUniform Meeting, 3rd Monday-Unit room dinner at 6:50
p.m.
Pray for America and our leaders daily!
Yours for fun,
“Doc Rock”

Psalms 103:17 The mercy of the Lord is
from everlasting to everlasting upon
them that fear Him.
Jeremiah said “It is of the Lord’s mercy that we are
not consumed. Because His compassion failed not. They
are new every morning.” The Lord’s mercies are very
tender. We have remissions of sins through the tender
mercies of God. they are very plentiful when we anger
our God. He is slow to anger and His mercy is for all. He
hath not dealt with us after our sins but hath cast them
as far as the east is from the west. God’s mercies are from
everlasting to everlasting. He has said with everlasting
kindness, “Will I have mercy on thee.”
Let us be grateful for the mercies of God that is
extended to us day and night.

DADE CO. SHRINE CLUB
Greeting Club Members!!!
As I write this news article for the Alhambran for the
month of August, summertime will be about over until next
year! Kids will be getting ready to go back to school. I bet
moms, dads, and grandparents will be real happy about
that! Fall is around the corner. The leaves will be changing
colors and falling off of the trees soon!!
Just a reminder about the Sundays dinners held on the
first and third Sunday of each month at Alhambra from
11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. for $7.00 a plate. All money raised
on the dinners every month goes to the Alhambra Shrine
general fund/Alhambra Shrine Ladies Helping Hands
Group for their special projects. We need people to bus
tables, clean tables, help cook, and take up the money. If
your church or organization would like to attend these
dinners just call the shrine center office and RSVP your
table.
Just a reminder there will be no Birthday night for the
month of August, the regular Birthday night will be held on
Monday, September 21, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. If your birthday is
July thru September 2009 this is for you. this is a free dinner
for the Nobles and their Ladies/Guests to enjoy! So send
your cards back in to the shrine center office as quickly as
possible and come and spend your special night with us!
By the time this is printed the club will have given
$100.00 to the Alhambra Shrine Ladies Helping Hands
Group for a Ice Cream Machine. we also gave $150.00 to the
Chattanooga Scottish Rite for their Shoe Fund drive to buy
shoes for the kids in the Chattanooga area. We have 2 drives
a year, one in September and one in December. The first
Shoe Drive will be Sunday, September 13, 2009 from 1 p.m.
until 4 p.m. at 1345 Hickory Valley Road. The workers will
eat at noon before the Shoe Drive starts at 1 p.m. We need
all the help we can get. So come out and help. If you have
never been to a Scottish Rite Shoe Drive before, come on out
you will truly be blessed to see a kid get a new pair of shoes.
It makes your heart feel good to see a kid smile! We gave
out nearly 1200 pairs of shoes a year during the 2 Shoe
Drives. So come out and see what it is all about.
It’s about Shrine Circus time in October. It is never to
early to start selling circus ads and making money for
Alhambra Shrine Center. So Nobles, when you get your
circus tickets send you money back as quickly as possible,
don’t let them lay on the coffee table and forget about them.
Tell your wife to write a check and send them back!
Let’s all remember the sick, shut-ins, and our troops in
our daily prayers! There will be no shrine club meeting in
August.
The club has it’s regular meeting on the first Thursday
at Randy’s Restaurant with meal/social starting at 6:30
p.m., meeting at 7:00 p.m. The next meeting will be
September 3, 2009. All members try to attend.

The big news on our 2009 Circus is the
addition of Corporate Sponsors at the circus. This
is an opportunity for our circus to grow in
attendance and revenue, as well as our Nobility
to earn points toward some very nice gifts.
Chairman J. Mack Weems, Ron Dixon and I are
working to make the sales of circus book ads and
corporate sponsors exceed our fundraising goals
and make sales rewarding for our sales people.
Nobles and Ladies are encourage to ask your
Unit Captains & Club Presidents how you can
participate. Simply drop by the office and see
Glenn or Belinda for the details. The gifts and
prizes for our members are super and the list will
grow as we develop the prize list more.
Feel free to call if I can be of any help to
anyone.
Thanks

TIN LIZZIES
GENERAL INFORMATION: I want to start off by saying
something about our parade July the 4th on Signal Mtn. We
had a total of ten to show up for this outing, which was
outstanding and everyone had a great time. As I have
stated over the years, we need to keep our servicemen and
women in our thoughts and prayers. On this occasion we
had the privilege of having Lt. Commander Carol
McKenzie, daughter of Captain Joe Gebis, as our parade
marshal. We have had the privilege of being around Lt.
commander McKenzie on several occasions and she is such
an outstanding person and all of us enjoy her company and
her willingness to be at some of our functions. Her rank
will change in just a few months as she will take charge of
her own ship and will be promoted to the rank of
Commander. We are looking forward to that occasion as
she is going to have her swearing in ceremony in
Chattanooga in the near future. I want to say more about
our service people later in this article.
CAPTAIN GEBIS’ CORNER: It was a great joy to see all of
you who turned out for the Signal Mtn. parade. I know
each of you took time out of a busy schedule to be there.
For all of you who have contributed to the work being
done on our unit room in replacing the floor, a special
thanks to all of you. We are going to continue, as much as
possible, our monthly families get togethers.
AUGUST BIRTHDAYS: Active member Ken Shrum on
the 18th, Auby Longley 20th. Lady Reba Shrum on the 5th
and Honorary member Lady Billie Hudson on the 25th.
Sure hope you all have a great day with many more

birthdays to come. To all Nobles and their Ladies who have
a birthday this month, we wish you the very best.
PARADES/FESTIVALS/CONVENTIONS: We have no
parades schedule as of this writing but rest assured, if one
shows up this unit is ready and willing to take part in it.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: As was stated at the beginning of
this article, I want to say some more about our military
men and women. As I returned home from our parade on
the 4th of July and stopped for some food, I had the
privilege of meeting one of our ladies whose husband is a
member of the Highlanders and is also serving in the
military. Mrs. Stan Keirsey told me that Noble Stan Keirsey
is in Baghdad and will be there for six months. I expressed
to her how much I appreciate all that, not only Noble Stan,
but all of those who belong to Alhambra who have served
and are serving during this time of turmoil, how much we
admire the duties that they are performing for the good of
our country. I know you join me in stating that it is a
tremendous task that these military people perform on a
daily basis. Not only members of Alhambra but everyone
who serves for our country, we owe a debt of gratitude to
all of them. I will not get off of my soap box by saying
again; keep these folks in your thoughts and prayers. If you
have news for this article, give me a call and I will do my
best to get it into the article.

BUGGY PATROL
On June 26th the Boyd’s Speedway in the East Ridge
and Ringgold location, presented the first Shriners Race
Night. The event was hosted by the Buggy patrol Unit and
the Harvey family, Bobby, Connie, Robert, Janie and
Richard, who is also a driver. Congratulations and thank
you for this huge effort.
It was announced that $3.00 of ticket sales would be
donated to the Alhambra Shrine Transportation Fund. I
would say it was a great showing of the Nobility, with the
Fez very visible everywhere, and with the Illustrious Sir
Robert “Moe” Stoner and Divan leading the way, it was
indeed a great and memorable event.
An additional attraction, provided by Ill. Sir Gerald
Walker, Past Potentate of Syrian Temple, and Board
Member Emeriti of the Cincinnati Burns Hospital, with his
replica of a 1940 Indianapolis Sprint Car, which he drove,
along with an older style dirt track race car, around the
track for a few laps, for the enjoyment of the many
attending spectators. A big thank you to Sir Jerry for this
fabulous treat.
Cares and Concerns: Captain Charley Parker is doing
fine after his visit to the Crossville C.M.C. Hospital. Several

the Unit. Captain Wayne Gibson is staying close to his Lady
Judy who is reported not doing well. The Buggy Unit
wishes Judy well and strength at times like this. I have not
heard of any others but wish all a healthy and pleasant
summer.
Speaking of summer, I would like to announce at the
July Unit meeting, the August outing for the Buggy Unit.
The date is set, the location will be at at the Goodell Country
Place, Southside of Crossville, TN.
I am sure the news of the Imperial Session, and the
decisions made concerning the Shrine Hospitals, will be
available. It will affect all the Nobles and Van Drivers.
Times have not been the same and it would seem the Shrine
itself needs some help, Fraternally and Spiritually.

RED FEZ
SHRINE CLUB
RED FEZ
KID’S DAY
June 14th at the Red Fez Shrine Club: Let’s look at the
big picture. People everywhere. Members directing traffic,
dine in or carry out is heard over the hand held radios,
collecting tickets, cutting fresh homemade desserts, pouring
home made sweet ice tea, serving BBQ and baked beans
from pans brought straight from the pits where the
preparation for this day began last June, the day after the
51st BBQ ended. Everything runs like a well-oiled machine.
The 52nd annual BBQ at the Red Fez Shrine Club is
underway. The members make it happen.
Cabin visitation has begun with golf carts darting
around the park, visitors and friends in tow. There she is,
waving proudly above the park, our flag that flew last year
over the capitol in honor of the Red Fez veterans, reminding
us of our freedom to gather for such an event like this.
Everyone knows this is the one and only fundraiser for this
club. Every member has a job, whether selling tickets or
carrying out the trash, everyone is a willing participant.
Randy Mitchell our 3rd Vice President had this to say
about the BBQ: “Billy Armour, Mickey Smith and their
crew, did an outstanding job putting together and pulling
off a great BBQ. The same goes to Dorothy Isham for
arranging a work schedule together that “got the job done”.
Through the years, there have been so many members
that gave so much of themselves to this organization in
ways that go unmentioned and they never seem to get the
recognition they deserve. But the children know. They and
their families are aware and grateful of the care and services
they receive. They may not see each of you ‘eye to eye’ but
in their hearts they are close to those who helped in some
small way to make their lives better.
It is now the day after the BBQ and preparations have
begun for the 53rd annual BBQ in June of 2010. How much
Looking at the beach, it is dotted with 27 kids in swim
suits, life jackets and carrying fishing poles in anticipation
of the 2nd annual kids day fishing tournament. Each
hoping to be the one that finds “Nemo”. What a renewing
experience to see the anticipation and excitement on the
faces of those who have assembled to participate in this two
hour challenge of patience. Referring, of course, to the
parents, grand parents and those who choose to be put
through this type of torture. Waiting for the moment when
their family member emerges with the “one that didn’t get
away”.
KIDS at the Red Fez Shrine Club stands for: Kinda
Involved Doin’ Stuff. That sums up this day exactly. There
was something for family members of all ages. The day was
not long enough to encompass all the activities planned for
this group. There was sun visor art, face painting, cotton
candy, ice cream, hot dogs, sack races, dunking tank, water
balloon toss, sand crafts, games and who knows what else.
A “Tip of the Fez” to our members and special ladies
that made this day happen.
The members of the Red Fez Shrine Club would like to
take this opportunity to thank those who made this day
possible for our children, grand children and great grand
children.
From Randy Mitchell: Theresa Pelfrey and the ladies
who helped her, my hat’s off to them. It was a great KIDS
DAY. Everyone I saw was having a GREAT TIME even the
big kids. THANK YOU to all that worked and to all that just
came out and had fun.
Our pictures tell the story.
