Ziyadeh, MD, FACP, FRCP Professor & Chairperson Department of Internal Medicine SUBJECT: The Appointment of: Dr. Jana Al Hashash It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Jana G. Al Hashash, MD, MSc as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. In addition to general gastroenterology, her subspecialty is inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Dr. Al Hashash has had an excellent scholastic background and received outstanding training. She graduated from the American Community School in Beirut with an International Baccalaureate diploma, then joined AUB to complete her undergraduate studies (BSc in 2002 with distinction) and medical education (MD in 2006). After spending one year of postdoctoral research in the GI Division at AUBMC, she moved to the USA to complete 3 years of residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was in the clinician-scientist track and simultaneously completed a Certificate in Clinical Research in 2010 during her residency training. At the University of Pittsburgh, Jana was selected to be a fellow in Gastroenterology, and she completed her fellowship training in 2013 with a focus on IBD under the mentorship of leaders in the field. She is American Board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Retained on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Al Hashash became an Assistant Professor of Medicine in 2013 when she joined the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and the IBD Center of Excellence. In 2016, she received a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Clinical Research from the University of Pittsburgh. Between 2015 and 2017, she served as the Medical Director of the Infusion Center of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Subspecialty Education Coordinator for the GI Division at the Department of Internal Medicine. She continues to hold an appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Al Hashash received numerous prestigious awards and honors for her teaching, research and clinical care, including: Dean's honor listing in her undergraduate and graduate school years, several travel grants during her fellowship by the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America and the American College of Gastroenterology, the IBD Cornerstones ‘Best of DDW GI Fellow Award’, the AGA-Horizon Pharma Fellow Abstract Prize, the WE CARE small grant award in IBD Research, the Fellowship2Leadership Gastroenterology/Hepatology Award, and a Junior Faculty Research Award from the University of Pittsburgh in 2015. She was recognized by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on multiple occasions for her high Patient Satisfaction (Press-Ganey) scores and was awarded the 'Above and Beyond Award' for Commitment to Patient Care in 2015. Dr. Al Hashash is extremely active in translational and clinical research. She has presented her work on numerous occasions in the USA and internationally and has authored nearly 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 7 book chapters. She was recently asked to write 2 chapters in UpToDate on the management of Crohn's disease. She received significant funding for two of her projects and is currently pursuing NIH funding. She has mentored several residents and fellows and helped them achieve their career goals. Dr. Al Hashash's current work has been focusing on the prevention of postoperative recurrence of Crohn's disease and she also works on the role of rectal spectroscopy in the early detection of more proximal colonic dysplasia and cancer in patients with ulcerative colitis.
