21st June 2012 - Catholic Regional College Sydenham

Feast of Corpus Christi
21 June 2012 Edition 5:2:12
“He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood
Lives in me and I live in him.
As I, who am sent by the living Father,
Myself draw life from the Father
So whoever eats me will draw life from me.
This is the bread come down from heaven;
Not like the bread our ancestors ate: they are dead.
But anyone who eats this bread will live forever.” (John 6.57-58)
God of all goodness and source of our strength,
You nourish us through the Eucharist
As a sign of your undivided love for us.
Empowered by this gift,
May we live our lives in loving service of our sisters and brothers
And work together to build your kingdom here on Earth.
Amen

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
This week also marked the commencement of a
new semester. Year 11 VCE students started their
Unit 2 studies while Year 12
VCE students
commenced Unit 4 studies. Students will be
provided with work to complete over the next few
weeks as well as over the upcoming non tuition
period. With the first half of the year now at a close,
staff have been busy writing reports. These may be
collected from staff at the upcoming Parent-StudentTeacher interviews to be held next week. Additional
information is available in this newsletter.
Next week the College celebrates our College Feast
Day. Each year, the College celebrates the Feast of
Corpus Christi as our College Feast Day. This year
we will celebrate on Wednesday 27 June.
Attendance on this day by all staff and students is
compulsory and required. This year will be even
more significant given that our community has been
formed anew and it is our 30th Anniversary.
The College Feast Day is taken from the crest and
founders of the College. Our Crest takes the shape
of a quatrefoil which is a cruciform configuration of
five intersecting circles. In the medieval church, the
quatrefoil symbolised the ‘Catholic’ or ‘Universal’
church’s mission to preach the Word throughout all
of a creation. The four peripheral circles depict the
four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John),
touching at four points on the principle circle; that is
– the four corners of the earth. The quatrefoil is
common in ecclesiastical architecture throughout
Christendom, both as a decoration of stonework and
as a component of window design. It is at the center
of the crest that we draw our Feast Day. That we
acknowledge the Eucharistic presence of Christ
through the miracle of the Mass, is indicated by the
abstract graphic at the centre of the College Crest.
The interpretation of this abstract contends that it
depicts Christ’s Body and Blood under the worldly
appearance of Host and Chalice. Since 1983, the
College has taken as its own festive day of prayer
and celebration, the feast of Corpus Christi. Only
when the whole College shares in one Eucharist is
the true meaning of College and community
illuminated.
This year, our Feast Day will commence with Mass
celebrated by the Archbishop at St Patrick’s
Cathedral. Buses will be provided to and from the
College. Following Mass, we have booked out Luna
Park where lunch will be provided and we will enjoy
an afternoon of fun as a community.

BIOLOGY G-TAC EXCURSION
On Thursday 24 May ten Year 11 biology students
were selected to attend an excursion to the Gene
Technology Access Centre, a genetics laboratory in
Melbourne. This biology excursion enabled us to
experience what it is like to work at a laboratory and the
multiple fields of work that any students can be lean
into after completing a bachelor of science and/or
medical degree.
The ten of us along side nine other independent school,
in the encouragement of Science week had the
opportunity to participate in activities demonstrating the
work done at the institute, we where given the
opportunity to test pus and effect of infection. As well
as decoding DNA using the latest computer programs,
the activity specifically looked at HIV/AIDS and the
mutated gene, which cause people to be immune to the
disease. We listened to people speak about their
careers and had a look inside a cell.
The experience is one to remember with much thanks
and appreciation to Paul McGuire and Leanne Carroll
for making this day a hugh success.
