Constitution Week Activities at KDS Most Americans know that July 4th is our nation's birthday. Far fewer Americans know that September 17th is the birthday of our government, the date in 1787 on which delegates to the Philadelphia Convention completed and signed the U.S. Constitution. The ideas on which America was founded--commitments to the rule of law, limited government and the ideals of liberty, equality and justice--are embodied in the Constitution, the oldest written constitution of any nation on Earth. Constitution Day is intended to celebrate not only the birthday of our government, but the ideas that make us Americans. Thus, it is most appropriate that students, teachers and administrators of this school founded by the Daughters of the American Revolution, observe and celebrate Constitution Week. The Gunter Mountain Chapter, NSDAR, celebrated the th 226 anniversary of the signing of the Constitution at KDS DAR Elementary School, Middle School, and High School during Constitution Week 2013 with activities that included all students. Proclamations were signed by each Principal and two students at each school proclaiming Constitution Week September 17-23, 2013. Elementary Principal Keith Buchanan is shown signing the proclamation with students Peyton Eggleston and Ansley Barnes. Patriotic Stickers were given to each student in the Elementary School as well as a Patriotic Coloring Sheet. Preamble book marks, Preamble cards, and Bill of Rights leaflets were distributed to students in the Middle School and High School. The Gunter Mountain Chapter placed Constitution Week Posters, Preamble Posters, and Patriotic Displays in all three schools. All activities planned during Constitution Week by the Chapter were designed to encourage the students at KDS to learn about the importance of this historic document. st At right is Angela Childress’ 1 grade class with their coloring sheets. th This was the 5 year in a row that the Stephens Chapter, NSDAR, celebrated Constitution Week nd with their Adopt-A-Class, Annie Conwell’s 2 grade. Stephens Chapter members Julea Moats, Amelia Denslow, Tori Denslow, and Peggy Johnson brought cupcakes and goodie bags with flags, bookmarks, flag pins, and some special treats for the students to take home. The students also watched a Schoolhouse Rock video about the Constitution and participated in a discussion about its importance. The ladies also discussed the Pledge of Allegiance, practiced reciting the Pledge with the students, and played a question and answer game with them. Mrs. Conwell said that since this activity with her class started several years ago she has noticed that her students do a much better job participating in and being attentive during the Pledge.
